First serious 'Hitman' app development may now be underway.
Prior to the build-up to 'Hitman: Absolution' Square Enix announced the formation of a new studio, Square Enix Montreal. The new studio was spearheaded by IO veterans and set the stage for dual AAA 'Hitman' titles. Considering the gap in time between the releases of 'Hitman: Blood Money' and 'Absolution,' extra development resources seemed very promising for the franchise. Unfortunately, with 'Hitman: Absolution' being one of a number of titles ('Tomb Raider,' Sleeping Dogs') whose sales performance did not meet Square Enix performance expectations, it appears that 'Hitman' as a AAA franchise been scaled back from a multi studio approach.
And now, after looking over job listings at Square Enix Montreal and the LinkedIn Profiles of various associated industry personal, it seems clear that the new studio is now geared towards Square Enix's true business, mobile development. With so much 'Hitman' talent tied up at the new studio, the expectation now is that real 'Hitman' mobile title (as opposed to previous minor tie-in releases) must be in development.
