The resurrected fighter has wandered dangerously close to free-to-play territory.
After years of rumors that Microsoft would somehow resurrect or re-release a version of the 90's era Rare made 'Killer Instinct,' a new game has finally materialized as an Xbox One exclusive.
The original game had two arcade installments and two home versions, one for the Super Nintendo and one for the Nintendo 64. It has been so long since Nintendo and Rare failed to follow up 'Killer Instinct 2' and 'Killer Instinct Gold' that the new game is simply titled 'Killer Instinct.'
Like the originals, the new game pits two fighters on a 2D plane. 3D models replace the classic pseudo 3D sprites, and of course the game's combo heavy system, since featured in a multitude of other fighting games, returns in full force. The new game is being developed by Double Helix, with a narrow involvement of the series' originator, Rare.
The new game has drawn ire for among other things being described as a free-to-play title. The game is free to play on and offline in demo form, which has one playable character, Jago. Players have the option to either buy packs of characters, or the entire roster. Either way, "free-to-play" is likely not the term sought out by the originators of the new project.
'Killer Instinct' is expected to launch in November along with the new console.
