The new channel would offer 2D shows converted to 3D
The folks at CBS have been making some moves toward a full 3D network according to people in the know. They've been traveling to cable operators and showing off their 2D to 3D conversions and putting out feelers for a station dedicated to that.
The idea would be to offer a pay channel that would presumably broadcast the same content that's on CBS, but in 3D. It's a cool enough idea, but having to shell out extra just to watch 2D to 3D conversions doesn't seem like something that's going to get people excited.
CBS is reportedly working with Digital Dynamic Depth (DDD) to inexpensively convert material to 3D. Of course, inexpensive is a relative term - pricing looks to be about $10,000 per hour of footage.
