Company gets six million dollar finance boost.
Thanks to further help from current investors as well as a good bump from their newest partners, General Catalyst, Boxee was able to raise six million dollars for further research, development and product improvement. The free and open source amalgam of social networking and streaming media that is Boxee has long targeted users with existing PC integrated home theater setups, but that’s one thing they’re looking to change.
According to Boxee’s official blog, one of their main goals over the next year is hardware integration. “To make Boxee more accessible for a mainstream consumer it’s important for us to get Boxee embedded into connected TVs and Blu-Ray players, game consoles and set-top boxes. We’re already talking to device makers to ensure Boxee works on a variety of platforms for 2010.”
Also announced were speculative improvements to the service itself, promising a healthy mix of developer and user feedback. Adding more content is just one part of the process, Boxee also has plans to attract more developers in hopes of creating a productive environment for distribution and monetization of apps.
