The Philadelphia Eagles’ big win at the Super Bowl wasn’t the only surprise of the weekend. While ‘Maze Runner’ was expected to retain the top spot on the box office charts, it was actually defeated by the seven-week-old ‘Jumanji’ sequel. All in all, it was a pretty weak weekend, which is expected each time it competes with the NFL’s pinnacle event.

‘Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle<\/strong>‘ didn’t make its way into the #1 spot until its third week. It stayed there for three weeks until it was defeated by the latest ‘Maze Runner’. In an unexpected turn of events, the two just flop-flopped. ‘Jumanji’ grossed $11 million, bringing its domestic total up to $352.6 million and its international total to $503.1 million. If Sony had known that a ‘Jumanji’ sequel could have generated $855.7 million (so far), the studio wouldn’t have waited so long to make one.<\/p>\n ‘Maze Runner: The Death Cure<\/strong>‘ had a short-lived run at the top. A steep 58% dip resulted in a $10.2 million second week. After making $39.7 million in its first ten days, the film’s domestic run isn’t looking too hot. Fortunately, the $62 million picture has grossed $142.8 million overseas, giving it a $182.6 million worldwide total. While that’s a good number, ‘The Death Cure’ certainly won’t reach the $300 million mark like the previous two installments did.<\/p>\n The weekend’s solitary newcomer, the PG-13 horror movie ‘Winchester<\/strong>‘, could only muster a #3 debut and $9.2 million. Considering its mere $3.5 million budget, it’s not in danger of flopping. The film’s international rollout has yet to kick off, and that should definitely boost it a bit.<\/p>\n ‘The Greatest Showman<\/strong>‘ once again held onto fourth place by dropping just 18% in attendance. Many repeat viewers truly believe the opening song’s line that exclaims, “This is the greatest show.” Another $7.8 million brings the movie’s domestic gross up to $137.4 million. Overseas, it has pulled $153 million, giving it a worldwide total of $290.4 million.<\/p>\n ‘Hostiles<\/strong>‘ rounded out the Top 5 by falling just 45% over its second week in wide release. It still has yet to launch overseas, but has made $21.2 million domestically to date.<\/p>\n The odd-looking PG-13 animated feature ‘Bilal: A New Breed of Hero<\/strong>‘ was nothing more than a new breed of blah.
