For one, there weren’t any new big sexual assault claims made over Thanksgiving. What a relief. The cherry on top of that great news is that the box office thrived.

Pixar’s latest had a good opening, ‘Justice League’ fell a bit more than it should have (given the holiday crowds), but ‘Wonder’ held over wonderfully. Both the expansion of Denzel Washington’s latest drama and the Christmas offering that came out of left field failed, but the limited releases performed very well. Collectively, Thanksgiving weekend was up over last year. It wasn’t up high enough to bring this dismal year out of the red, but it’s a step in the right direction.

By mashing up two plots of previous Pixar movies (‘Up’ and ‘Inside Out’) with Guillermo del Toro’s ‘The Book of Life’, Pixar was able to score another #1 finish in 2017 with ‘Coco‘. Neither the three- nor the five-day totals were grand on the Disney/Pixar scale, but they were definitely good enough. ‘Coco’ launched on Wednesday with $22.1 million. Over the weekend proper, it drew $49 million. After killing it in Mexico’s cinemas (where it’s currently the country’s highest-grossing film), ‘Coco’ expanded out to a few other big markets. To date, it has grossed $82.2 million internationally, for a worldwide total of $153.3 million. With a price tag estimated between $175 million and $200 million, the film will need to stay strong as it expands into more markets.

While most of the Top 10 holdovers dropped between 6% to 30%, ‘Justice League‘ fell 57% over the holiday weekend and was bumped down a rank by ‘Coco’. Its sophomore week brought in $40.7 million, giving it a ten-day domestic total of $171.5 million. Internationally, the DC multi-hero picture continues to deliver. With $309.8 million in foreign ticket sales, its global returns are up to $481.3 million. Just a few more hundred million to go.

Last weekend’s surprise hit ‘Wonder‘ only fell 19% in attendance. With a third-place haul of $22.3 million, the $20 million family film has a ten-day total of $69.4 million. Its international release is barely underway (less than $1 million so far), but it’s all revenue from here on out.

By dropping only 23% week-over-week, ‘Thor: Ragnarok‘ finished in fourth place. With another $16.7 million, its domestic gross is up to $277.4 million. Overseas, it crossed the $500 million milestone this weekend, placing its worldwide total at $790 million, ranking it #7 on the list of MCU movies.

‘Daddy’s Home 2‘ saw a minimal dip in attendance over the holiday weekend. Falling just 8%, it rounded out the Top 5 with $13.2 million. After three week, the $69 million Will Ferrell/Mark Wahlberg comedy has made $72.6 million. Its global expansion gained some steam this weekend. With $15 million earned at the foreign box office, the holiday movie has a worldwide total of $87.6 million.

From four screens to 1,669 screens, the expansion of ‘Roman J. Israel, Esq.‘ wasn’t impressive. While it managed to land in the #9 spot, it only grossed $4.5 million and a weak per-screen average of $2,705. The $22 million drama has $6.2 million so far.

Bleecker Street’s ‘The Man Who Invented Christmas‘ had an even poorer debut on 626 screens. Finishing at #12, it took $1.3 million and a per-screen average of $2,146. Perhaps it will play better to international audiences.

Joe Wright’s ‘The Darkest Hour‘ had a strong four-screen opening. The film’s $176,000 draw resulted in a per-screen average of $44,000. Focus Features will expand the historical drama wide over the coming weeks.

Top 10:

1. ‘Coco’ (Buena Vista) – $49,022,000

2. ‘Justice League’ (Warner Bros.) – $40,730,000

3. ‘Wonder’ (Lionsgate) – $22,300,000

4. ‘Thor: Ragnarok’ (Buena Vista) – $16,791,000

5. ‘Daddy’s Home 2’ (Paramount) – $13,250,000

6. ‘Murder on the Orient Express’ (Fox) – $13,000,000

7. ‘The Star’ (Sony) – $6,875,000

8. ‘A Bad Moms Christmas’ (STX) – $5,010,000

9. ‘Roman J.
