As we all knew he would, Peter Parker climbed to the top of the box office charts.

‘Spider-Man: Homecoming‘ grossed an impressive $117 million from 4,348 screens. That ranks the movie as #7 of the 16 Marvel Cinematic Universe openings, but #1 in terms of a character’s first standalone film. It also debuted in 60% of the international markets, where it brought in another $140 million, for a $257 million worldwide opening.

Slipping 53% in its second week, ‘Despicable Me 3‘ is trending similarly to ‘Cars 3’, which isn’t exactly a good thing. Universal/Illumination’s latest finished in second place with $33.9 million, bringing its ten-day total to $149.1 million. Fortunately, the messy threequel only cost $80 million to produce and foreign moviegoers continue to eat it up. With $298.4 million in overseas grosses and a global total of $447.5 million, the ‘Despicable’ movies aren’t leaving any time soon.

‘Baby Driver‘, Edgar Wright’s highest-grossing film, stayed healthy by crossing the finish line third and dropping a mild 38%. A $12.7 million second week brings the movie’s domestic total up to $56.8 million. For a relatively small $38 million picture, that draw is excellent. Overseas, it has made $14 million from 14 markets, bringing its worldwide total to $70.8 million.

Seemingly unaffected by the comic book competition from ‘Spider-Man’, ‘Wonder Woman‘ fell just 36% and retained its #4 spot. The additional $10.1 million brings its domestic earnings to $368.7 million. With $377 in international ticket sales, DC’s very well performing picture has made $745.7 million worldwide.

Michael Bay’s ‘Transformers: The Last Knight‘ rounded out the Top 5. The film’s third week resulted in a 63% drop in attendance for $6.3 million. In its prime (pun intended), a third week would yield more than $20 million, but this movie can’t come close to that retention level in North America. Domestically, ‘The Last Knight’ is at $118.9 million. Meanwhile, however, international moviegoers are still drawn to the Bayhem. With $375.7 milion internationally, the movie up to $494.6 million worldwide.

At the specialty box office, A24’s limited release of ‘A Ghost Story‘ was quite successful. From four screens, it earned $108,067 and a per-screen average of $27,017. Here’s hoping that A24 expands the romantic drama sooner than later!

Top 10:

1. ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’ (Sony) – $117,015,000

2. ‘Despicable Me 3’ (Universal) – $33,998,875

3. ‘Baby Driver’ (Sony) – $12,750,000

4. ‘Wonder Woman’ (Warner Bros.) – $10,135,000

5. ‘Transformers: The Last Knight’ (Paramount) – $6,300,000

6. ‘Cars 3’ (Buena Vista) – $5,636,000

7. ‘The House’ (Warner Bros.) – $4,815,000

8. ‘The Big Sick’ (Lionsgate) – $3,650,000

9. ’47 Meters Downs’ (Entertainment Studios) – $2,844,000

10. ‘The Beguiled’ (Focus) – $2,086,225

The Marvel golden goose laid another valuable egg this weekend.
