The big-budget sequel underwhelmed, the romance picture outpaced expectations, and nobody bothered to see the well-reviewed comedy.

The one prediction that was fulfilled was the first place debut for ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows‘. However, while the 2014 ‘Turtles‘ picture opened to $65.5 million, ‘Out of the Shadows’ only claimed $35.2 million. That 46% drop isn’t at all what Paramount hoped for. Whichever exec(s) pulled the trigger on this one had better hope that the studio gets some of Playmates’ merchandising revenue. Produced on a budget of $135 million, the sequel needs to dominate overseas to be profitable, which is definitely still doable. The $34 million that the film earned internationally this weekend will need to continue consistently as it rolls out into the rest of the foreign markets.

Even though ‘Turtles’ was expected to topple the second weekend of ‘X-Men: Apocalypse‘, no one expected ‘Apocalypse’ to fall as hard as it did. The 66% week-over-week drop-off resulted in just $22.3 million, giving it a ten day total of $116.4 million. At this rate, the VFX-heavy superhero movie will struggle to make back its $178 million production budget domestically. Fortunately for Fox, the film’s overseas sales are still climbing. It has grossed $246 million internationally, bringing its global total up to $402.5 million.

Adapted from a popular romance novel, ‘Me Before You‘ beat all of its studio predictions. Made on a $20 million budget, the movie finished in the #3 spot with $18.2 million. With good word-of-mouth and no similar competition opening soon, it’s expected to hold over quite well. International showings saw the same success. From 16 territories, it opened to $7 million, for a total of $25.9 million.

After taking a box office beating last weekend, ‘Alice Through the Looking Glass‘ faced even more disappointment in its second week. The $170 million picture dropped 60%, bringing in $10.6 million with a measly $2,841 per-screen average. The film’s domestic ten-day total sits at $50.7 million. Disney should be relieved that the international box office is solid. While ‘Alice’ flounders stateside, it has made $125.5 million overseas, for a worldwide total of $176.2 million. Those numbers are still far from where 2010’s ‘Alice in Wonderland‘ was at this point, but it’s a step in the right direction for Disney’s shareholders.

Rounding out the Top 5 was ‘The Angry Birds Movie‘. In the third week of its run, the animated comedy made $9.7 million and brought its domestic total up to $86.6 million. It has also drawn more than $196 million overseas, giving it a worldwide tally of $283.4 million.

Andy Samberg and countless celebrity cameos may have made critics laugh in ‘Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping‘, but the one-note marketing campaign couldn’t entice an audience to attend. Debuting in the #8 spot, the R-rated mockumentary drew $4.6 million from 2,311 locations, giving it a low $2,003 per-screen average. Produced on a $20 million budget, it’s highly unlikely that even strong international numbers can save this comedy from being a box office failure, but we’ll have to wait for the international roll-out to start before we label it a total flop.

Top 10:

1. ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows’ (Paramount) – $35,250,000

2. ‘X-Men: Apocalypse’ (Fox) – $22,325,000

3. ‘Me Before You’ (Warner Bros.) – $18,270,000

4. ‘Alice Through the Looking Glass’ (Buena Vista) – $10,691,000

5. ‘The Angry Birds Movie’ (Sony) – $9,775,000

6. ‘Captain America: Civil War’ (Buena Vista) – $7,591,000

7. ‘Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising’ (Universal) – $4,700,000

8. ‘Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping’ (Universal) – $4,630,000

9. ‘The Jungle Book’ (Buena Vista) – $4,247,000

10. ‘The Nice Guys’ (Warner Bros.) – $3,520,000

When it comes to the weekend’s new movies, nothing happened as expected.
