Well, thanks to ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’, ‘Zootopia’, ‘The Jungle Book’ and, now, Captain America’s latest outing, Disney just annihilated that record in only 128 days.

The folks at Disney knew they were acquiring a goose that could lay golden eggs when they purchased Marvel. Now 13 movies into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, ‘Captain America: Civil War‘ just made the franchise’s third-highest domestic debut. From 4,226 locations, the first tentpole of the summer blockbuster season opened to an impressive $181.7 million. The only other MCU entries to perform stronger were the two ‘Avenger’ titles. ‘Civil War’ not only came close to giving ‘The Age of Ultron‘ a run for its money, but it eclipsed the opening of the last ‘Captain America’ picture (‘The Winter Soldier‘) by more than $86 million. Adding the domestic opening weekend numbers with the film’s $496.6 million ten-day international total gives ‘Civil War’ a $678.3 million worldwide gross so far, which places it on track to potentially joining the $1 billion club.

Not only did Disney take the top spot at the box office, the overachieving studio held a firm grip on second place as well with ‘The Jungle Book‘. Even with a 50% drop in attendance, the four-week-old picture took in another $21.8 million, which brings its domestic total up to $284.9 million. Combined with $491.2 million internationally, ‘The Jungle Book’ sits with a worldwide total of $776.1 million.

In a surprising turn of events, last weekend’s flop ‘Mother’s Day‘ actually climbed up the charts. The timely ensemble holiday flick went up 7.6% from its opening weekend and climbed into the #3 spot. The $9 million second week brings its ten-day total up to $20.7 million. However, now that the actual Mother’s Day holiday is behind us, this movie is likely to die off quickly.

‘The Huntsman: Winter’s War‘ took another heavy punch in the gut. A 62.8% decline in attendance resulted in its third week only bringing in $3.5 million to land in fourth place. Although the $115 million sequel has grossed $105.9 million overseas, its domestic total lags way behind at $40.3 million.

Rounding out the Top 5 was the Key & Peele comedy ‘Keanu‘. Unlike ‘Mother’s Day’, weekend #2 was brutal for this one. The R-rated kitten comedy fell 67.4% in attendance. The $3 million second week brought its ten-day total to $15.1 million. On the upside, the Warner Bros. picture was made on a small production budget of just $15 million.

On the indie front, Fox Searchlight’s ‘A Bigger Splash‘ made a great splash from just five locations. The drama reeled in $110,000 for a per-screen average of $22,000.

Top 10:

1. ‘Captain America: Civil War’ (Buena Vista) – $181,791,000

2. ‘The Jungle Book’ (Buena Vista) – $21,873,000

3. ‘Mother’s Day’ (Open Road) – $9,006,141

4. ‘The Huntsman: Winter’s War’ (Universal) – $3,580,000

5. ‘Keanu’ (Warner Bros.) – $3,080,000

6. ‘Barbership: The Next Cut’ (Warner Bros.) – $2,700,000

7. ‘Zootopia’ (Buena Vista) – $2,677,000

8. ‘The Boss’ (Universal) – $1,750,000

9. ‘Ratchet & Clank’ (Focus) – $1,462,000

10. ‘Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice’ (Warner Bros.) – $1,045,000

Do you remember last spring when Universal became the fastest studio to cross the domestic $1 billion mark in a calendar year, and it did so in just 165 days?
