Meanwhile, that movie’s new competition floundered.

With another $31.5 million, the foul-mouthed ‘Deadpool‘ now sits with a domestic total of $285.6 million. Considering the quality of Fox’s movie, I’m surprised to see it thriving this much. Banking solely on the shock value of its content, it’s now the third-highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time behind ‘American Sniper’ and ‘The Passion of the Christ’. Overseas, ‘Deadpool’ has accumulated $324.1 million, giving it a worldwide 17-day total of $609.8 million.

Lionsgate’s ‘Gods of Egypt‘ opened in second place to $14 million. Produced on a $140 million budget, the ‘Clash of the Titans’ knockoff trainwreck only scored a per-screen average of $4,491. Its international success was a little better, but not much. $24.2 million came in from overseas showings, which is not nearly enough to get the film out the red.

‘Kung Fu Panda 3‘ earned more in its fifth week than two of the weekend’s new major releases. A $9 million finish landed it in the #3 spot. To date, ‘Panda 3’ has grossed $128.4 million domestically and $185.7 million overseas. That $314.2 million worldwide total puts it $317.5 million behind the global theatrical gross of the first ‘Kung Fu Panda‘ and $351.4 million behind ‘Kung Fu Panda 2‘. When Disney’s ‘Zootopia’ opens this weekend, ‘Panda’ will quickly fall off the charts – especially when you take into account the international success, buzz and acclaim that ‘Zootopia’ brings with it.

Even last week’s bland Christian title ‘Risen‘ was able to beat two of the nationwide releases. The film finished its sophomore weekend in the #4 spot. Falling a lighter-than-expected 41% week-over-week, the $20 million Bible epic added $7 million to its run, which now sits at $22.7 million domestically. Its international rollout has yet to kick off.

‘Eddie the Eagle‘ rounded out the Top 5. From producer Matthew Vaughn and starring Taron Egerton and Hugh Jackman, Fox’s underdog Olympic sports drama debuted to $6.3 million. Although that number is weak, it’s right on par with studio predictions. The $23 million drama has yet to debut overseas (perhaps international markets are wisely choosing to open it during this year’s actual Olympic season to capitalize on the buzz?), but it’s expected to hold over well due to great word-of-mouth.

Performing under expectations was John Hillcoat’s crooked cop thriller ‘Triple 9‘. A $6.1 million opening put it in the #6 spot. Produced on an estimated $20 million budget, the ensemble picture’s pending international release should push it to bankability.

Theatrical numbers for ‘Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Sword of Destiny’ have yet to be announced.

Top 10:

1. ‘Deadpool’ (Fox) – $31,500,000

2. ‘Gods of Egypt’ (Lionsgate) – $14,000,000

3. ‘Kung Fu Panda 3’ (Fox) – $9,000,000

4. ‘Risen’ (Sony) – $7,000,000

5. ‘Eddie the Eagle’ (Fox) – $6,300,000

6. ‘Triple 9’ (Open Road) – $6,103,096

7. ‘How to Be Single’ (Warner Bros.) – $5,155,000

8. ‘The Witch’ (A24) – $5,009,662

9. ‘Race’ (Focus) – $4,273,000

10. ‘The Revenant’ (Fox) – $3,800,000

Marvel’s smartass superhero reigned supreme at the box office for the third consecutive week.
