So much for Pixar alum Brad Bird’s perfect track record. While ‘Tomorrowland<\/strong>‘ finished in the #1 spot, it only did so by narrowly beating out week-old holdover ‘Pitch Perfect 2’. On top of that, the film closed out the four-day weekend nearly $10 million below expectations. Produced with a budget of $190 million, Disney’s futuristic adventure flick pulled in $32.9 million over the three-day weekend and $40.7 million over the four-day weekend. Its overseas kick-off also took a hit with just $26.7 million from 65 fairly large international markets. While ‘Tomorrowland’ is nowhere near the failure that Disney had with ‘The Lone Ranger<\/a>‘, it’s certainly not a success either. Considering the track record that Pixar directors have had making live action films (e.g. Andrew Stanton with ‘John Carter<\/a>‘), perhaps Disney should put an end to that transition.<\/p>\n ‘Pitch Perfect 2<\/strong>‘ landed in second place with a $30.8 million three-day sophomore weekend. The ten-day total for the $29 million comedy is an impressive $109.5 million. Internationally, it continues to hit high notes as well. With $61.7 million overseas income, its worldwide 11-day total is up to $179 million.<\/p>\n Also in its second week, ‘Mad Max: Fury Road<\/strong>‘ continued to find success. The three-day weekend resulted in a 45% holdover and another $30.8 million. The intense R-rated action movie has grossed $95.5 million domestically and $124.3 million overseas through the first 11 days of its run.<\/p>\n The Sam Raimi-produced 3D ‘Poltergeist<\/strong>‘ remake had an excellent opening weekend considering its $35 million budget. The $22.6 million it earned over the three-day weekend was stronger than analyst predictions. The reported four-day numbers are inconsistent at this point, placing it between $25.5 million and $27.7 million.<\/p>\n In its fourth week, ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron<\/strong>‘ rounded out the Top 5 with a $21.6 million. At this point in 2012, the first ‘Avengers’ was still in second place (behind the debut of ‘Men in Black 3’) with $36.6 million. ‘Ulton’ climbed past the domestic $400 million milestone and now sits with a worldwide total of $1.18 billion, making it the eighth-highest grossing movie of all time.<\/p>\n Sony Pictures Classics’ two-screen opening of the Jennifer Connelly drama ‘Aloft<\/strong>‘ saw terrible returns. Only $2,116 was generated this weekend, giving it a per-screen average of just $1,058. If the average ticket price was $10, that means that only 211 people \u2013 in total \u2013 saw the movie this weekend.
