The movie is also expected to do very well as it opens overseas next week.

Although ‘Gone Girl‘ was dethroned in its third weekend, it hasn’t lost any of its luster. Only slipping a very mild 32%, the marital thriller crossed the domestic $100 million mark by adding another $17.8 million to its run. With a 17-day total of $107 million, the film is well on track to become David Fincher’s highest grossing picture.

The Guillermo del Toro-produced ‘The Book of Life‘ opened right on par with many of other recent family titles. Given that the 3D animated picture attempted to capitalize on the proven Mexican-American market, it’s actually a bit surprising that the movie only drew $17 million. While the domestic numbers may not be that impressive, the film’s upcoming international release is expected to be stronger.

Fourth place went to week-old ‘Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day‘. While its opening weekend was a disappointment, the family comedy’s second weekend had a soft 34% drop that resulted in another $12 million. ‘Alexander’ has now made $36.8 million.

Have moviegoers finally realized that Nicholas Sparks is guilty of re-writing the same sappy stories over and over again? It appears that might be the case. ‘The Best of Me‘ opened in fifth place with $10.2 million, a mere fraction of what Sparks’ romance adaptations typically earn. This is the lowest opening ever for a Sparks movie and will be lucky to make $30 million by the end of its domestic theatrical run.

Fox Searchlight’s extremely hyped ‘Birdman‘ had a huge four-screen debut that resulted in $415,000. Its platform release kicks off this coming weekend and the movie should be showing nationwide within the next three or four weeks.

Box office numbers have yet to be released for ‘Camp X-Ray’ or ‘The Town that Dreaded Sundown’.

Top 10:

1. ‘Fury’ (Sony) – $23,500,000

2. ‘Gone Girl’ (Fox) – $17,800,000

3. ‘The Book of Life’ (Fox) – $17,000,000

4. ‘Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day’ (Buena Vista) – $12,039,000

5. ‘The Best of Me’ (Relativity) – $10,200,000

6. ‘Dracula Untold’ (Universal) – $9,889,000

7. ‘The Judge’ (Warner Bros.) – $7,940,000

8. ‘Annabelle’ (Warner Bros.) – $7,925,000

9. ‘The Equalizer’ (Sony) – $5,450,000

10. ‘The Maze Runner’ (Fox) – $4,500,000

Over this very congested weekend, Brad Pitt and his tank plowed through the competition to win the top spot at the box office.

[743
7731,7744,7682,7675,178,7681,7680
