I flew all over the country and eventually into Canada for a slew of different weddings. I went on my first cruise. I went horseback riding in Mexico. I bought a theremin, because… well, of course I did.

Brian Hoss

‘This Is 40’

Restricting my choices to movies from 2012, I have to go with ‘This Is 40’. Granted, I’m not yet approaching 40, but at some point in 2012, I decided not to wait until I am 40 to indulge in a mid-life crisis. The upswing of this decision mainly resulted in a regular involvement in physical recreation and some harmless carousing. All in all, I went from being a bit narcissistic about my age to relatively fancy-free, from which I derived considerable enjoyment and well-being despite the aforementioned crisis-related ridicule.

Tom Landy

‘Road Trip’
‘Star Trek: First Contact’
‘Die Another Day’
‘Stir Crazy’

When I heard that the entire principle cast of ‘Star Trek: The Next Generation’ was coming together at the Calgary Expo in April, I couldn’t resist the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to drive down and attend this 25th anniversary reunion. I was also able to meet the nine main bridge crew members in person, including Captain Jean-Luc Picard himself, Sir Patrick Stewart. For the most part, it was a fantastic experience. Technically, I guess it was second contact with Jonathan Frakes and Michael Dorn (since I met them a few months earlier).

However, my vacation was abruptly cut short. On the Sunday morning, instead of leaving my hotel for the third and final day of the convention, I was rushed by ambulance to the hospital where I spent about a week in intensive care. It’s a long story that I’d rather forget, so let’s just skip to the end and say that I survived my ordeal.

Finally, like Josh, my family was also planning to move at the end of 2012. Unfortunately though, problem after problem arose and we are still waiting for everything to be finished so we can finally move into the new place. Since we were supposed to be in at the end of October, needless to say, being stuck in limbo for this long is taking its toll on my sanity.

Josh Zyber

‘Thinner’
‘Sudden Death’
‘Misery’
‘Dream House’
‘The Money Pit’
‘High Anxiety’

Translation: I had a rollercoaster of a year. Things started on an up note after I resolved to stop being such a fat slob and get in shape. Over the first few months of the year, I dropped 50 pounds, and have (mostly) successfully kept that off. Unfortunately, the unexpected death of our favorite pet and some other personal losses left Mrs. Z and I in a pretty bad funk mid-year. Things picked up again when we decided to finally get out of our apartment and buy a house. But, as I’ve been detailing in other recent posts, that has turned into a hugely expensive and stressful project.

2013 has already had a shaky start (‘Outbreak’ would be the title of choice), but we’re still hopeful that this year will be better once flu season ends and our home renovation is complete.

—

Now it’s your turn to have some fun with this in the Comments.
