Instead, ‘Skyfall’ hopped into this measly weekend’s top spot with $11 million, which brings its nationwide five-weekend total to $261.6 million. It will be nice to see what a good weekend at the box office looks like again when ‘The Hobbit’ opens this Friday.

Coming in at second place was ‘Rise of Guardians‘ with $10.5 million. In part due to the film’s sub-par opening, DreamWorks’ stock has dropped. Considering that there aren’t any other family flicks opening until 2013, hopefully ‘Rise’ will have some legs. The movie only dipped 21% in attendance from last weekend and is currently higher in the Top 10 than it has been over its 17-day haul.

‘The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn, Part 2‘ slid from first place to third in its fourth weekend. The $9.2 million weekend brings its domestic total to $268.7 million. Both ‘Lincoln‘ and ‘Life of Pi‘ held onto their respective fourth and fifth place positions behind it. The $9.1 million for ‘Lincoln’ brings its five-weekend run to $97.3 million, while the $8.3 million for ‘Pi’ brings that one up to $60.9 million.

Finally, we get to the only new nationwide release of the weekend. Unable to crack the Top 5, Gerard Butler’s lazy rom-com ‘Playing for Keeps‘ debuted with only $6 million. Alongside ‘Chasing Mavericks’, this marks Butler’s second major flop in just two months. Like his washed-up character in the movie, perhaps it’s time for Butler to move on.

The Jake Gyllenhaal / Michael Peña cop drama ‘End of Watch‘ was re-released on 1,249 screens, but absolutely bombed. With a screen count more than enough to be considered “wide,” it finished the weekend in the #15 spot with only $733,000. The most painful and embarrassing aspect of this is the per-screen total of only $587. Ouch.

Despite pretty negative reviews, ‘Hyde Park on Hudson‘ warranted a decent debut. On just four screens, the film pulled in $83,300 and a $20,825 per-screen average.

The weekend estimates for ‘Lay the Favorite‘ and ‘Deadfall‘ have not yet been announced.

Top 10:

1. ‘Skyfall’ (Sony) – $11,000,000

2. ‘Rise of the Guardians’ (DreamWorks) – $10,540,000

3. ‘The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn, Part 2’ (Summit) – $9,200,000

4. ‘Lincoln’ (Buena Vista) – $9,115,000

5. ‘Life of Pi’ (Fox) – $8,300,000

6. ‘Playing for Keeps’ (Fox) – $6,000,000

7. ‘Wreck-It Ralph’ (Buena Vista) – $4,904,000

8. ‘Red Dawn’ (FilmDistrict) – $4,261,000

9. ‘Flight’ (Paramount) – $3,130,000

10. ‘Killing Them Softly’ (Weinstein) – $2,748,000

Even though this weekend featured one major new release, nobody expected the cookie-cutter romantic comedy to take first place – and it surely didn’t.
