The &#8216;Shrek&#8217; spin-off hopped over the $100 million mark, but didn&#8217;t make enough to stop an epic underdog from taking first.<br \/>\n<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Predicted to debut with $20.5 million, &#8216;<strong>Immortals<\/strong>&#8216; blew past the competition to claim the #1 spot with $32 million. This gives Relativity Media its best-ever opening. &#8216;Immortals&#8217; also earned big overseas bucks, with a worldwide opening box office total of $68 million. 66% of the action adventure&#8217;s revenue came from 3D showings.<\/p>\n<p>As of now, Adam Sandler&#8217;s gender-bending comedy <strong>Jack and Jill<\/strong> has a $500,000 lead on &#8216;Puss in Boots&#8217;, but the two could easily flip when the final totals are announced this afternoon. With $26 million, &#8216;Jack and Jill&#8217; opened half a million dollars above expectations.<\/p>\n<p>Clint Eastwood&#8217;s bio-pic &#8216;<strong>J. Edgar<\/strong>&#8216; debuted right alongside studio predictions with $11.5 million. Despite premiering on Wednesday in select cities, the Leonardo DiCaprio vehicle failed to open on par with Eastwood&#8217;s other recent flicks.<\/p>\n<p>Cannes award winner &#8216;<strong>Melancholia<\/strong>&#8216; featured a healthy opening with $265,000 on only 19 screens. With $50,800 on 12 screens, Werner Herzog&#8217;s latest documentary <strong>Into the Abyss<\/strong> didn&#8217;t open quite as strongly, but still did well.<\/p>\n<p>In its fourth weekend, &#8216;<strong>Paranormal Activity 3<\/strong>&#8216; joined &#8216;Puss in Boots&#8217; to cross the $100 million mark. Meanwhile, &#8216;<strong>The Three Musketeers<\/strong>&#8216; dropped out of the rankings with $495,000, which brings its four-week box office total to $19.1 million.
