People seem to like the first two of Wes Craven’s self-aware horror thrillers (they never did much for me), but the third was generally considered a disaster. With more than a decade passed since the last entry, this is around the time you’d expect a fresh reboot, not another direct sequel that is, by most accounts, a pointless waste of time. Nevertheless, if you’re a fan of the others but can’t quite commit to buying this one, you can stream it now.

After the surprising success of ‘Earth‘ and ‘Oceans‘, Disneynature returned this year with its latest travelogue docuementary, ‘African Cats‘. This one didn’t do quite as well, but these things generally make for some nice, family-friendly high-definition eye candy.

For me, the most interesting title on this list is ‘Submarine‘. The British coming-of-age drama generated a lot of buzz in the festival and indie film circuits. It’s also available on Blu-ray this week, but I think a rental might be the best place to start.

Josh’s Random VUDU Pick:

The recent theatrical release of Steven Soderbergh’s disease thriller ‘Contagion’ has put me in the mood to rewatch ‘The Andromeda Strain‘, Robert Wise’s 1971 adaptation of the novel by Michael Crichton. The film follows the efforts of scientists in a research lab as they attempt to contain a super-virus with the potential to wipe out mankind. Unlike Soderbergh’s movie, which is spread thin among numerous characters and storylines, ‘The Andromeda Strain’ benefits from a claustrophobic setting, which helps to ratchet up the suspense. The film is not available on Blu-ray yet, but you can rent it from VUDU in 1080p HDX quality now.

All dates provided refer specifically to rental availability. Check VUDU for sell-through availability, if interested. Be sure to also check for VUDU’s $0.99 Movie of the Day offers, which are announced each day on the company’s Facebook and Twitter pages.

This week’s new VUDU additions are an eclectic bunch.
