{"id":1541,"date":"2010-05-19T08:00:05","date_gmt":"2010-05-19T15:00:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.highdefdigest.com\/blog\/?p=1541"},"modified":"2017-09-25T10:44:29","modified_gmt":"2017-09-25T17:44:29","slug":"spoiler-alerts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.highdefdigest.com\/blog\/spoiler-alerts\/","title":{"rendered":"OMG Spoilarz! \u2013 Why You Shouldn\u2019t Care About Spoilers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As one of those folks who writes about movies on a regular basis, I&#8217;m faced with a challenge.\u00a0 I have to explain why a movie is good without actually revealing the major plot points or talking about the ending.\u00a0 Alternatively, I can throw in a sentence explaining that there will be &#8220;spoilers&#8221; in the article.\u00a0 (There will be spoilers aplenty in this one)<\/p>\n<p>The whole practice is ridiculous, and I&#8217;ve always been of the opinion that if knowing the end of a movie will ruin it, then it wasn&#8217;t a good movie to begin with.<\/p>\n<h6><!--more--><\/h6>\n<p>Let&#8217;s take an example, or say, 100 examples.\u00a0 I think we can all agree that the AFI &#8220;100 Years\u2026 100 Movies&#8221; list is a pretty good indicator of film quality.\u00a0 You or I may disagree on a particular film or two, but generally, it&#8217;s a good list. \u00a0Every movie on that list is &#8216;spoiler proof.&#8217;\u00a0 You could, and probably do, know the end to every single one of them and they&#8217;d still hold up as cinematic masterpieces.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.highdefdigest.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/6th.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1542\" src=\"https:\/\/www.highdefdigest.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/6th.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"180\" height=\"177\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.highdefdigest.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/6th.jpg 286w, https:\/\/www.highdefdigest.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/6th-50x50.jpg 50w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 180px) 100vw, 180px\" \/><\/a>And there are a few films with surprising plot points on the list.\u00a0 &#8216;Psycho&#8217; is a great example.\u00a0 You know, the whole Norman Bates\/mother thing.\u00a0 But that&#8217;s the point, isn&#8217;t it?\u00a0 You know already, and you probably knew before seeing the movie.\u00a0 I did.\u00a0 It didn&#8217;t make &#8216;Psycho&#8217; any less enthralling.<\/p>\n<p>Not to go down the Hitchcock route again, but &#8216;Rear Window&#8217; is another great film with a big surprise.\u00a0 If you haven&#8217;t seen the movie, you&#8217;re still probably familiar with one of the many parodies and homages, including an episode of &#8216;The Simpsons.&#8217;\u00a0 It&#8217;s not the ending that makes the movie great, it&#8217;s the buildup to the ending and the clean execution.<\/p>\n<p>How about &#8216;Empire Strikes Back&#8217; for a change of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.highdefdigest.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/Psyhco.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-1543\" src=\"https:\/\/www.highdefdigest.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/Psyhco-300x161.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"240\" height=\"129\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.highdefdigest.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/Psyhco-300x161.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.highdefdigest.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/Psyhco.jpg 550w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 240px) 100vw, 240px\" \/><\/a>pace.\u00a0 There&#8217;s no question that the secret of Luke&#8217;s father was a big deal for people that experienced it for the first time, but I was born in 1982, which means I&#8217;ve known Vader was Luke&#8217;s dad ever since I can remember.\u00a0 The surprise isn&#8217;t what made the scene powerful.<\/p>\n<p>M.
