{"id":1526,"date":"2010-05-20T06:00:27","date_gmt":"2010-05-20T13:00:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.highdefdigest.com\/blog\/?p=1526"},"modified":"2017-08-10T13:13:30","modified_gmt":"2017-08-10T20:13:30","slug":"movies-to-remake","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.highdefdigest.com\/blog\/movies-to-remake\/","title":{"rendered":"5 Movies That Need to be Remade Now"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Ah remakes.\u00a0 Remaking an old film is a great way to make a movie without having to put a lot of effort into it.\u00a0 We&#8217;ve seen a few already this year, and there are plenty more on the way, including &#8216;Escape from New York,&#8217; &#8216;Arthur,&#8217; &#8216;The Birds,&#8217; &#8216;Clue&#8217; and even &#8216;They Live.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Dick,&#8221; you say, &#8220;why would you even think about encouraging the already remake-crazy film industry to do more?&#8221;\u00a0 Even if you don&#8217;t say that, let&#8217;s pretend for the sake of narrative.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Well,&#8221; says I, &#8220;have you considered that even the worst movie may have a cool premise but suffer from poor execution?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Some movies absolutely need to be remade, and these are they.<\/p>\n<h6><!--more--><\/h6>\n<h5>5. Sphere<\/h5>\n<p>&#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.highdefdigest.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/Sphere.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-1529\" src=\"https:\/\/www.highdefdigest.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/Sphere-201x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"161\" height=\"240\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.highdefdigest.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/Sphere-201x300.jpg 201w, https:\/\/www.highdefdigest.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/Sphere.jpg 268w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 161px) 100vw, 161px\" \/><\/a>Sphere&#8217; is a big one for me.\u00a0 I was a huge Michael Crichton fan in my early teens, about the same time that &#8216;Jurassic Park&#8217; hit theaters.\u00a0 I loved the adaptation, even if it was less than perfect, and couldn&#8217;t wait to see the upcoming &#8216;Sphere,&#8217; which is still my favorite Crichton book of all time.<\/p>\n<p>Just four years after &#8216;Jurassic Park&#8217; delighted me, &#8216;Sphere&#8217; disappointed me.\u00a0 And it&#8217;s a shame too.\u00a0 It&#8217;s got a great cast in Dustin Hoffman, Samuel L. Jackson and Liev Shchreiber, and it was written by Kurt Wimmer \u2013 a favorite of mine.<\/p>\n<p>Somehow, &#8216;Sphere&#8217; just didn&#8217;t work.\u00a0 I think it&#8217;s one of those movies that needs a smaller budget and a lesser known cast to really happen correctly.\u00a0 After all, $80 million and an all-star cast couldn&#8217;t get it done properly.\u00a0 Let&#8217;s give it to a relative unknown who knows how to make a budget work.\u00a0 Neill Blomkamp maybe?<\/p>\n<h5>4. LXG<\/h5>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.highdefdigest.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/League.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-1531\" src=\"https:\/\/www.highdefdigest.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/League-193x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"122\" height=\"189\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.highdefdigest.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/League-193x300.jpg 193w, https:\/\/www.highdefdigest.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/League.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 122px) 100vw, 122px\" \/><\/a>There&#8217;s a reason Alan Moore doesn&#8217;t go see movies based off of his comics.\u00a0 Well, there are two reasons.\u00a0 The first is that the movies based on his comics, save &#8216;Watchmen&#8217; and, to some, &#8216;V for Vendetta,&#8217; are absolutely atrocious.\u00a0 The second reason \u2013 he&#8217;s a crazy recluse that worships a snake god.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;LXG&#8217; was very loosely based on the &#8216;League of Extraordinary Gentlemen&#8217; comics.\u00a0 The comics were a brilliant collection of literary characters that rewarded the reader for having working knowledge of some of fiction&#8217;s classic characters.\u00a0 The movie was not.<\/p>\n<p>And for the remake?\u00a0 Simple.\u00a0 Give it to Zack Snyder and let him do his thing.\u00a0 He&#8217;s got his own project in the works, and it&#8217;s far too early to tell how that will work out.\u00a0 But boy can he adapt!<\/p>\n<h5>3. A Sound of Thunder<\/h5>\n<p>I try to go into movies with no expectations.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t read reviews beforehand, and I try not to color my opinion of the film before I watch it.\u00a0 When it comes to &#8216;A Sound of Thunder,&#8217; I <a href=\"https:\/\/www.highdefdigest.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/sound-of-thunder-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-1534\" src=\"https:\/\/www.highdefdigest.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/sound-of-thunder-1-300x193.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"210\" height=\"135\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.highdefdigest.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/sound-of-thunder-1-300x193.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.highdefdigest.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/sound-of-thunder-1.jpg 650w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 210px) 100vw, 210px\" \/><\/a>really wish I had. It&#8217;s easily one of the worst movies I&#8217;ve seen theatrically.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m not normally the guy that complains about bad effects.\u00a0 I watch &#8216;Dr. Who&#8217; after all, so I&#8217;m used to the CG looking a little clunky.\u00a0 But &#8216;A Sound of Thunder&#8217; had some of the worst digital effects of all time.\u00a0 I swear I saw a two-dimensional car drive by.<\/p>\n<p>What&#8217;s worse is that it&#8217;s based on a Ray Bradbury story.\u00a0 Bradbury, if you&#8217;re not familiar, is the guy who wrote &#8216;Fahrenheit 451,&#8217; &#8216;The Martian Chronicles,&#8217; and a short story called &#8216;Rocket Man,&#8217; which inspired the song of the same name.<\/p>\n<p>Really, anyone could take this film and make it better.\u00a0 My own personal nemesis Tim Burton could take this movie, cast Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter in the leads, feature a score by Danny Elfman and design all the sets in his signature &#8220;style&#8221; and it&#8217;d still be an improvement.<\/p>\n<h5>2. Plan 9 From Outer Space<\/h5>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.highdefdigest.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/Plan-9.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-1535\" src=\"https:\/\/www.highdefdigest.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/Plan-9-300x190.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"240\" height=\"152\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.highdefdigest.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/Plan-9-300x190.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.highdefdigest.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/Plan-9.jpg 470w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 240px) 100vw, 240px\" \/><\/a>Admittedly, neither the movie nor the concept for the movie was very good.\u00a0 &#8216;Plan 9&#8217; is regarded as one of the worst movies of all time, and it&#8217;s a claim that&#8217;s hard to debate.\u00a0 Shots are reused ad nauseum, the aliens are unthreatening and laughable, and Bela Lugosi&#8217;s scenes were filmed for a completely different movie.<\/p>\n<p>So why bother remaking it?\u00a0 Consider it a challenge. \u00a0It would take one hell of a director to take &#8216;Plan 9&#8217; and make it good. \u00a0And no, that goofy Tor Johnson remake doesn&#8217;t count because it will be awful. \u00a0There&#8217;s a chance it may have the line &#8220;Time for go to bed,&#8221; though, which just might make it worth watching.<\/p>\n<p>As far as the who goes, any director who&#8217;s looking for a challenge.\u00a0 Joss Whedon would be an interesting choice, since he could either go the serious route, or take it in a completely new direction, like the &#8216;Little Shop of Horrors&#8217; musical remake.<\/p>\n<h5>1.
