Wonder Woman

SteelBook Alert: The Wonder of It All [UPDATED!]

SteelBook collectors dismayed at the ugly Pop Art design of this week’s release of ‘Wonder Woman’ will be relieved to learn that a preferable option is available overseas. Unfortunately, if you live in the U.S., it may not be easy to obtain.

USA

Available at: Best Buy
Release date: September 19, 2017
Price: $34.99
Video Formats: 4k Ultra HD/Blu-ray/Digital Copy (no 3D)

As a reminder, this is the Best Buy exclusive SteelBook we’re stuck with in the U.S. In my opinion, it’s ugly and grossly sexualized in ways not appropriate to the themes or content of the movie.

Wonder Woman USA SteelBook

UK

After I complained about that in this week’s Blu-ray Highlights post, reader Timcharger pointed out the existence of a much classier SteelBook in the UK, scheduled for release in a couple weeks.

Available at: HMV (no shipping outside the UK)
Release date: October 9, 2017
Price: £22.99
Video Formats: Blu-ray/3D (no UHD)
Region code: Warner Bros. Blu-rays are almost always region-free

Wonder Woman UK & Hong Kong SteelBook SteelBook

That indeed looks much better. It also includes the 3D version of the movie (though no 4k Ultra HD). Sadly, in the UK it’s exclusive to HMV, which will not ship internationally.

Luckily, all hope is not lost! That same SteelBook is also available in Hong Kong. On the downside, it’s a lot more expensive.

Hong Kong

Available at: YesAsia
Release date: September 21, 2017
Price: $49.99 USD
Video Formats: Blu-ray/3D (no UHD)

This still leaves collectors in a difficult position. Either settle for the ugly Best Buy SteelBook or spend a lot of money to import.

I’m fortunate to have a friend in the UK who has agreed to pick up the HMV release and mail it to me himself. If you have your own friends in the country, this may be a good time to hit them up for a favor.

Late Updates!

Thanks to readers Mark and Nick on Facebook, I’ve been informed of more international SteelBook options for this movie.

France

Available at: FNAC
Release date: October 18, 2017
Price: €34.99
Video Formats: 4k Ultra HD/Blu-ray/3D

France appears to have the best all-around package. Retailer FNAC has the same SteelBook as the UK and Hong Kong, but the set includes 2D, 3D and UHD. I’m told (but haven’t tested myself) that FNAC will ship internationally. After currency conversion and shipping, it’ll probably wind up being even more expensive than the Hong Kong edition, sadly.

Wonder Woman French SteelBook

Germany

Available at: Amazon Germany
Release date: November 2, 2017
Price: €38.49
Video Formats: 4k Ultra HD/Blu-ray (no 3D)

This German release has pretty nice artwork. No 3D, unfortunately. Although Amazon Germany doesn’t have an English option, the site should be pretty easy to navigate if you’re familiar with other Amazon locations.

Available at: Media Markt
Release date:
Price: €25.49
Video Formats: Blu-ray (no 3D or UHD)

Here’s another variant from Germany. I know nothing about this retailer and cannot vouch for it.

Wonder Woman German SteelBook 2

This site also has a listing for a UHD SteelBook, but the photo in that one is not a SteelBook.

Australia

Available at: JB Hi-Fi
Release date: September 20, 2017
Price: $34.98 AUS
Video Formats: Blu-ray (no 3D or UHD)

The Australian and Italian editions appear to be identical. If you like this art (I don’t care for it, personally), pick whichever one is more convenient for you to import.

Italy

Available at: Amazon Italy
Release date: October 12, 2017
Price: €25.80
Video Formats: Blu-ray (no 3D or UHD)

Available at: HDZeta (Direct link not available yet)
Release date: TBD
Price: TBD
Video Formats: TBD, but there’s a 3D logo on the case spine in the image

“Either settle for the ugly Best Buy SteelBook or spend a lot of money to import”.

or….. do not buy any of then and safe money.

The key word is in the prior sentence.

“This still leaves COLLECTORS in a difficult position. Either settle for the ugly Best Buy SteelBook or spend a lot of money to import.”

And not to dismiss that key word, it is a sickness. It is a vice some of us have.

There is nothing sexualized about that Best Buy steelbook. Is your mind so focused on being politically correct, that you can’t even look at a classic comic character, that happens to be a female, and think you probably offending someone? Yes, females have breasts. Trying to purposely hide that fact is more offensive to me. I look at that steelbook and see a powerful legendary superhero. I guess all you see are breasts. Don’t put us all in your category.

I agree that this isn’t really all that sexualized. They didn’t pump up the size of her breasts and she’s not in some slutty, bimbo pose either. It actually reminds me of the very last scene from the film. Except that as far I can recall, there’s no moment like this in the actual movie so it comes off as a weird choice. That said, I think her position is awkward especially when you notice the lasso that makes her look like she’s swinging on it. It is an ugly steelbook overall and the import versions are far nicer.

But Josh, could you quit referring to any hand-drawn steelbook art you find ugly as Pop Art? Like the Logan steelbook before it, this is NOT a Pop Art steelbook.

Tell me, in the movie, how many times does Gal Gadot thrust her tits forward into the camera and viewers’ faces like this cartoon drawing of her does?

Her uniform in the drawing is also considerably lower-cut to expose more of her chest than the actual costume does. Is that, what, an optical illusion? Those cups can barely hold her jugs in and might slip off at any second.

      Compared to…

    • Timcharger

“I guess all you see are breasts.”

You know, as for psychological tendencies go, there could be worse conditions. Just saying. Not the worst thing, if that’s all one sees. What?! It was a curious sentence, can’t I point that out?

I didn’t see the FNAC edition either. They did however have a UHD & 3D combo with the German cover on it. I don’t think it’s a steelbook, but as it has UHD and 3D and it’s what I choose. I didn’t see an option on the FNAC site to ship to the US. They had alot of countries listed, but I did not see US. I may try again to get the steelbook, but if I can’t get it shipped….

          • Slayer117x

That worked, thanks. I agree with you though, FNAC’s shipping price is extreme. I think I’m going to pass on them. I think if the Digital Intermediate had been in 4k I’d go ahead and get it, but since I’ll probably buy it again when it is, I’m not willing to pay that much now.

Even the cover with a focus just on Gadot’s lips is pretty sexy, too. Just saying. What? I’m a collector. Just gonna buy every variant of WW, for collecting reasons. I wore my Superman T-shirt when watching his film; why can’t I wear my WW’s tiara as I collect every version of her film?

Part of me is wishing I didn’t preorder the Best Buy Steelbook – would have loved to have had the French version, however, shipping rates for anyone other than Zavvi and Amazon.co.uk tend to be stupid expensive (Germany at least has a flat shipping fee, whether its one item or 10). I try to avoid shopping from France, Italy and Germany if I can help it. I have a feeling the dollar to euro conversion, plus the cost of shipping, would cost more than the separate US 4k and 3D releases

I found a copy of the “All-Josh-Can-See-Are-B” version while browsing at a used bookstore, dirt cheap, so I picked it up. The bright colors of it, it doesn’t look that bad in-person. But the photo above has the J-card title covering the top of image, and Wonder Woman’s lasso just hovers above her clenched fist. The lasso is in a “S” shape. It makes no sense.
