That awkward moment will be when Jason Reitman’s new drama tanks this weekend.

I love ‘Thank You for Smoking’ and I’ve wanted to love every movie Jason Reitman’s has made since, but he hasn’t come close to producing another film of that caliber. ‘Up in the Air‘ was good, but ‘Juno‘ and ‘Young Adult‘ were shit. I have yet to see his latest, ‘Labor Day‘, but even my die-hard Reitman fan friends say that it’s bad. Reviews at last fall’s Toronto Film Festival were negative. While Reitman’s pictures are usually promoted as awards hopefuls, I imagine that the poor responses are the reason this one is getting a January release.

‘Labor Day’ stars Kate Winslet as a single mother stuck in a slump of depression. When she and her son offer a ride to a strange man (Josh Brolin), everything changes. She falls in love and it turns out that he’s an escaped convict. Drama ensues.

The weekend’s wider release is the R-rated (and supposedly crude) romantic comedy ‘That Awkward Moment‘. Zac Efron, Michael B. Jordan and Miles Teller star as three buddies who vow to keep their single status for as long as possible. Of course, they each immediately fall into relationships and have to keep that a secret from the others. I typically wouldn’t be too interested with a movie like this (especially because Miles Teller bugs me), however Efron and Jordan have potential. I’m curious.

Two limited indie releases don’t offer much hope either.

‘At Middleton‘ stars Andy Garcia and Vera Farmiga as parents who sneak away from their child’s college tour to have a special day on campus to themselves – a day to act like twenty-somethings and fall in love again. Sounds like a knock-off of the ‘Before Sunrise/Sunset/Midnight’ series.

Opening on an undisclosed number of screens is ‘Best Night Ever‘. From Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer – makers of the shitty parodies ‘Date Movie’, ‘Epic Movie’, ‘Meet the Spartans’ and ‘Vampires Suck’ – and starring no one you have ever seen, this alleged comedy follows a female foursome to Las Vegas for a wild bachelorette party. With a generic title, people might actually be fooled into seeing ‘Best Night Ever’, but I wouldn’t count on it.
