Weekend Box Office: Cat Eats Bird

Marvel’s latest standalone superhero adventure continued to dominate the box office over Oscar weekend. At the same time, Jennifer Lawrence’s spy thriller and Bruce Willis’ action reboot saw decent, but unimpressive, opening returns. As if the stormy weather and the Oscars had no effect on the box office, almost every title in the Top 10 had a light week-over-week drop-off.

Black Panther‘ fell 41% over its third week and added another $65.7 million to its bank. After 17 days, the film has deposited $501.1 million from North American ticket sales. Overseas, where it continues to expand, it added $56.2 million. With $396.6 million at the foreign box office, the 18th installment to Marvel’s Cinematic Universe has a worldwide total of $897.7 million and is on track to quickly become the first $1 billion picture of 2018.

Jennifer Lawrence’s ‘Red Sparrow‘ landed in a distant second place with $17 million. The R-rated cat-and-mouse thriller also grossed $26.5 million overseas, giving it a $43.5 million worldwide debut. Produced on a $69 million budget, it’s headed toward financial success, but it’s unclear whether the film will earn enough to warrant big-screen adaptations of the second and third novels in the book series.

Somehow, Eli Roth scrounged up a $30 million budget to produce ‘Death Wish‘, the reboot of Charles Bronson’s 1970s grindhouse series. Thanks to Bruce Willis on the marquis, this awful movie opened to $13 million, finished in third place and is on track to bow domestically around the $30 million mark. If it’s going to recoup marketing costs and turn a profit, the movie’s impending international release will need to have better turnout than the so-so North American performance, but it’s not impossible.

Jason Bateman and Rachel McAdams’ ‘Game Night‘ held over quite well in its second week. With a light 37% drop (which is very light when you consider its R rating), the comedy made another $10.7 million and finished at #4. The $37 million movie sits with a $33.5 million domestic ten-day total. Its international expansion continued this weekend, resulting in $16 million and a $49.5 million worldwide gross.

Without any kid-friendly competition, four-week-old ‘Peter Rabbit‘ fell just 22% in attendance and rounded out the Top 5 with $10 million. To date, the $50 million juvenile family flick has collected $84 million domestically. It finally opened overseas this weekend, where it made $17.8 million, pushing its global box office over the $100 million mark.

Crazy how big of a difference there is in the “fresh” rating. Either way, I’m looking forward to seeing this one in a week or two.
