Videogame Releases: Week of November 6th, 2011

Well, nothing big coming out this week, guess we can just move on. Oh, unless you count ‘Skyrim’, ‘Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3’ and HD versions of ‘Metal Gear Solid’. Which you should.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 (360, PC, PS3)

It’s been a while since any videogame has significantly crossed over into the mainstream culture, but the ‘Call of Duty’ franchise has pulled that off. Even people who don’t play games know the name, and they’re not quite as down on it as they tend to be on ‘World of Warcraft’ or ‘Guitar Hero’. ‘Modern Warfare 3’ promises plenty of new single-player adventures, but multi-player is the real attraction here. Killstreaks have been re-envisioned, as has the ranking system. New game modes have been added, tweaks were made in gameplay, and an optional Elite subscription gives you access to your stats, monthly DLC and more.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim (360, PC, PS3)

When I was 14, I played so much ‘Daggerfall’ that I walked face-first into a wall fully expecting that I’d climb up it like my character in the game did. The last two games in the ‘Elder Scrolls’ series haven’t quite captured my attention in the same way, but I fully expect ‘Skyrim’ to consume my life – or at least next weekend. I’ve been avoiding too much information about the game, since learning mechanics and making characters is what I live for, but I’ve heard a developer quoted as saying that ‘Skyrim’ plays more like ‘Fallout’ than ‘Oblivion’. That gets me very excited. The only question now: 360 or PC?

Metal Gear Solid HD Collection (360, PS3)

Have I mentioned how much I love the trend of classic games getting the HD treatment? Well, I’m going to mention it again. I love the trend of classic games getting the HD treatment. A lot. Being able to play the games I love without suffering black bars and chunky graphics is amazing. The ‘Metal Gear Solid HD Collection’ includes ‘Metal Gear Solid 2’, ‘Metal Gear Solid 3’ and ‘Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker’. You’ll also be able to access versions of ‘Metal Gear’ and ‘Metal Gear 2’ from within ‘Metal Gear Solid 3’.

“The only question now: 360 or PC?”

The obvious answer: PC. Ignoring all the other normal talking points, the Elder Scrolls series has always had an active modding community, which greatly extends replay value.

  2. I usually go consoles on games like Skyrim, I like the controller feel better, I have a good PC that should run this at all max settings but I just dont like the feel of the keyboard/mouse too much anymore, since I dont play games like this forever, I could care less about the mods as I wont play this anymore past actually beating it, and since I have game ADD most of the time I probably wont even finish it 😉

So needless to say, getting the 360 version this Friday so now I have that, Call of Duty, Gears 3, Batman, Dark Souls, Uncharted 3 and soon WWE 12 and Star Wars the Old Republic, I just have too much to play and I also have a newborn son now, lol, not gonna be enough time for all this gaming goodness!

  3. I usually go PC. In fact, I can use my 360 controller on my PC (works with Windows 7 if you have the wired controller, doesn’t work with the wireless ones), and the PC is hooked up to the TV, so I can play on the TV. I just need to get a wireless keyboard and mouse, or at least some USB extenders. But yeah, if i have the choice, I almost always go PC, because I can always upgrade a processor or video card and get better graphics on most games than I can get on the consoles.

Anyways, these releases explain a few things. Monday night, I was out around 11:30, and cars were at Gamestop, wrapped around the building, parked at the neighboring hotel, and even parked across the street. I knew something big had to be coming out this week.
