Videogame Releases: Week of May 18th, 2014

Topping the list of new videogame releases this week are the big revival of a classic franchise and a stylish new indie. It’s nice to have choices.

Wolfenstein: The New Order (PS4, Xbox One, PS3, 360, PC)

With a classic IP in need of win, Bethesda has infused ‘Wolfenstein: The New Order‘ with a serious dose of ‘Inglorious Basterds’ chic. Set in a well-presented alternate history, I hope the gameplay can hold up its end of the bargain.

Transistor (PS4, PC)

From the creators of ‘Bastion’, ‘Transistor‘ drips with style. The dystopian setting hosts a heroine and the sword-like Transistor as they brawl their way towards some kind of future truth. The game hovers close to a “Can’t Miss” for both PS4 and PC owners.

Drakengard 3 (PS3)

‘The Last Guardian’ may not have ever made it to the PS3, but with ‘Drakengard 3‘, players can still experience the dynamic of having a large winged beast at their side. This is a prequel to the series, and it’s not required to be familiar with prior titles. Six powerful sisters have bought peace and order to the land, but when one sister tries to kill the others, conflict ensues. Be ready for some pretty intense melodrama. This is the most promising console title from Square Enix in years.

Mugen Souls Z (PS3)

The sequel to ‘Mugen Souls’ charges players with turn-based RPG battles and an overdose of Moe characters. For fans of the style and turn-based battles, this may be just the ticket.

Killer Is Dead: Nightmare Edition (PC)

Coming in at a value price with bonus content and (hopefully) the best performing version of the game, Grasshopper Manufacture’s ‘Killer Is Dead‘ comes to the PC. This is likely a double-dip for many.

Tropico 5 (PC)

After having played the first, third and fourth games in the series, I have no doubt that ‘Tropico 5‘ will continue the joy of balancing the needs of a tropical island nation with the aims of its dictator. What are surprising here are the existence of a multiplayer mode (up to four players), and the possibility of diplomacy and intrigue between friends. Versions for the 360 and PS4 are due later this year.

Sweet, a new Tropico game AND a new Wolfenstein game, as well as a couple of awesome RPGs coming out this week? Oh man, if only there were 40 hours in a day!

Unfortunately (or perhaps fortunate depending on how I look at it in regards to how much time I have), I don’t have a PS3 at this time. But Tropico and Wolfenstein I am all over!

    • It’s definitely nice to have choices. Both Transistor and Wolfenstein are hard to miss, but I’m very curious about Drakengard 3. Tropico 5 will be like a holiday, just sitting at the computer trying to keep the little island nation above water.

I may check Wolfenstein out later in the year. Right now I’m busy with MLB 14 The Show and I can’t wait to play Watch_Dogs next week.

    • I can’t recall a game that more people were set to play than Watch Dogs. I went to Chicago a few weeks and wandered some around downtown looking for the spots to pick out in the game. The only thing that worries me is my own fatigue with open world games.
