Videogame Releases: Week of January 24th, 2011

Xbox 360, PS3 and PC owners all benefit this week from a pair of videogame sequels that look to be incredibly cool. Unfortunately, other consoles aren’t quite as exciting.

Dead Space 2 (360, PC, PS3)

The follow-up to the wildly successful ‘Dead Space’ is the logically named ‘Dead Space 2’. Like the previous game, ‘Dead Space 2’ stars Isaac Clarke along with plenty of the horrible creatures known as Nectomorphs.

Unlike the first game, ‘Dead Space 2’ introduces a multiplayer mode, in which four players act as humans trying to accomplish a task. Four others act as Nectomorphs and must stop them. As with most multiplayer games, you’re able to level up your characters and weapons as you go.

Two Worlds 2 (360, PC, PS3)

‘Two Worlds 2’ isn’t a sequel to a beloved game. In fact, the first game was widely panned as nothing more than a lesser version of Bethesda’s ‘Elder Scrolls’. Reality Pump, the developer, has a lot to prove with the sequel.

It’s tough to tell from preview videos just how good ‘Two Worlds 2’ really is, but the graphical improvement is obvious. The backgrounds, the character models, and even the spell effects have gotten overhauls and actually look good. That might be enough for some to give it another try.

Lord of Arcana (PSP)

There must be a market for ‘Monster Hunter’ type games in the U.S. or companies wouldn’t keep porting them. ‘Lord of Arcana’ banks on that audience. Unless you’re really into that particular niche or you just can’t get enough of the music of Nobuo Uematsu, this is one to avoid.

  1. Decided to look up Lord of Arcana. It will probably sell well, just because its Square, but, if you ask me, the “fun factor” of Square’s games has really gone downhill since Kingdom Hearts 2. They produced a few crap games before that, to be fair, but yeah. Not even impressed with the new Final Fantasy games – and I LOVED 1-9.

  2. Yeah, no love for 10. Pretty much put it down – after an hour into the game, I had only played like 15 minutes – the rest were all cut scenes. I think what annoyed me the most was the way the camera and the world was done, I just did not have as much freedom to move around.

10-2 was just goofy, 11 was horrendious, haven’t played 12 or 13 yet (they are on my to-do list), and FF7 Dirge of Cerbrus – WTH were they thinking?

My favorite was 9, followed by 4 and 5. Really haven’t gotten to play 6 yet, its on my shame pile. 🙁

While not technically in the Final Fantasy family, my favorite Square games were Chrono Cross and Chrono Trigger.

Also a big fan of Kingdom Hearts, but you already know that. 🙂
