Videogame Releases: Week of April 27th, 2014

Your friendly neighborhood movie tie-in is just one of several videogame releases this week. Of even more interest is a stunner from Ubisoft.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (PS4, 360, PS3, Wii U, PC, 3DS)

Long before the ‘Batman: Arkham’ franchise took the Caped Crusader to an open-world design, Spider-Man games had repeatedly allowed players to roam around New York City. The last movie tie-in, ‘The Amazing Spider-Man‘, did a decent job of aping the rhythmic combat of the Batman series. ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2‘ looks to build on that basis with a nice mix of stealth versus combat missions. The Xbox One version has been delayed, but may still be released at some point in the future.

Child of Light (Xbox One, PS4, 360, PS3, Wii U, PC)

Simply put, Ubisoft’s ‘Child of Light‘ looks amazing. The game is built with the UbiArt Framework that powered ‘Rayman Legends‘, but ‘Child of Light’ takes the hand-drawn art style to another level. More than just a platformer, ‘Child of Light’ promises a seriously deep RPG combat system in the vein of ‘Grandia II’.

Daylight (PS4, PC)

The excitement for ‘Daylight‘, a game that drops players in an abandoned asylum with only a cell phone flashlight to fend off baddies, shows that the survival horror genre is in the midst of some kind of comeback. Let’s hope it pays off.

Rambo: The Video Game (360, PS3, PC)

Reef Entertainment has decided to exploit Rambo fandom with the on-rails action title, ‘Rambo: The Video Game‘. This one has been out in Europe for a while and could be considered a “For Fans Only” title.

Kirby: Triple Deluxe (3DS)

Kirby has always been a second-string star in Nintendo’s line-up, but his ‘Dreamland’ titles are solid gaming gold. ‘Kirby: Triple Deluxe‘ looks to be the best Kirby game in more than decade, and another reason why the 3DS can’t be ignored.

Star Wars Pinball: Heroes Within (PS4, 360, PS3, Wii U, Vita, PC)

This four-table pinball set from Zen Studios looks like a gift for ‘Star Wars’ fans, casual or otherwise. ‘Star Wars Pinball: Heroes Within‘ features a Han Solo table, a Droids table, a ‘New Hope’ table, and a ‘Masters of the Force’ table.

The first four interest me. I have always been a fan of the Spiderman games, exactly for the reason you stated. I wonder how Daylight will play on my PC. I haven’t built a gaming rig – just a quad core laptop with a pretty decent 3D chip, So far, it has played all the games I have thrown at it, so it may be pretty decent (its an AMD A8, not sure off the top of my head which one. NOt the best, but its pretty good. It’s doing what I need it to right now).

    • Only the first four? Too bad we only reviews of the last two (right now anyway). Just guessing, but I bet you could run Daylight, though screen resolution can make a big difference.

🙂 The only portable I ever owned was a Game Gear – I mowed lawns all summer to be able to afford it, and then there was never any good games released for the thing, and the game it came with, Sonic, was the hardest game I ever played – could not beat the first boss. I was so burned on portables that I never bought another one.

Also never cared much for Kirby.

With Pinball games, I normally download demo tables. I play for maybe 10 minutes, then never pick up the game again. They fail to hold my attention.

I got Arkam Asylum in a few days ago, but every time I go to turn on the XBox, it reminds me that I have Stick of Truth in there, and I end up playing more of that. Not that I am complaining. 🙂

Also, STILL playing Game Dev Story on Android. Thanks, Dick Ward! Best couple of bucks I ever spent!

I am also just starting back with retro gaming. I have invested a bit of time in Super Castlevania 4 (the ONLY Castlevania game I like) and ActRaiser.

        • Game Gear – talk about big buyer’s remorse. At least it wasn’t a Virtual Boy.

I played some Child of Light, and it’s awesome. The battle system is really fun. If you didn’t have South Park…
