Videogame Releases for the Week of May 10, 2010

It’s a good week for games, but it’s a great week to be a PS3 owner.  ‘Lost Planet 2’ and ‘Skate 3’ are givens, but PS3 owners can also get their hands on one of the most unique games around.

3D Dot Game Heroes – PS3

If you’re an old fart like me (27) then you harken back to the days when games like ‘The Legend of Zelda’ and ‘Crystalis’ were the standard.  If you’re very much like me, then you think ‘A Link to the Past’ is the best in the series and wish there was something new that recaptured the magic of the Super Nintendo classic.  Well you and I are in luck.  ‘3D Dot Game Heroes’ is a loving tribute to those glory days.    And you won’t have to worry about breaking the bank, either.  ‘3D Dot Game Heroes’ is only $39.99 new.

Lost Planet 2 – 360, PC, PS3

I’ll come right out and say it.  I didn’t like ‘Lost Planet.’  I’m usually a fan of Capcom games, but the snowbound shooter just left me unfulfilled.  Still, ‘Lost Planet 2’ holds a lot of appeal for me.  Much of that appeal comes from the extremely cool cooperative mode that’s been added to the game.  There’s just something special about taking down a giant boss – and these bosses are enormous – with a couple of friends that can’t be beat.

Skate 3 – 360, PS3

Like skating videogames?  You’ll like ‘Skate 3.’  It’s like ‘Skate’ and ‘Skate 2’ but, as you can tell by the title, it’s one better.  There aren’t any huge differences between this and the last installment, but you’ll get some new places to skate.  If you find the series too difficult and would prefer more of a ‘Tony Hawk’ feel, there’s an easy mode for you, and those hoping for more of a simulation can take advantage of that mode.

Other games coming out this week:
‘8Ball Allstars’ (DS)
‘Age of Conan: Rise of the Godslayer’ (PC)
‘Aztec Treasure Hunt’ (DS)
‘Batman: Arkham Asylum: Game of the Year Edition’ (360, PC, PS3)

Has anyone played 3D Dot Heroes?

My concern is that it’s too much of a parody. Like, I love Lord Of The Rings, but I wouldn’t want a parody of Lord Of The Rings. Does that make sense…? That’s how I feel about Link To The Past.

Maybe I’ll give it a demo or a rent.

I have it coming from Amazon, but it’s not here yet. Once it is, you can be sure I’ll post about it. 🙂

I think the IGN review was pretty good if you’re curious how close they are. Otherwise, maybe check out the Kotaku review.

I’ve only put about 20-30 minutes into it so I can’t really comment about your concerns just yet.
