The Trailer Park: The Weird & the Beautiful

This week’s batch of trailers features a trio of movies that look both pretty and strange.

‘Laurence Anyways’

Gus Van Sant serves as producer to a film that feels very much like a Gus Van Sant movie, but actually comes from Canadian filmmaker Xavier Dolan. I’m partly interested because the preview functions weirdly like a music video for Visage’s “Fade to Grey.” I’m also curious because the story is about a transgender person and the many problems that person encounters. At the moment, the movie is making the rounds through the festival circuit. I doubt that I’ll have chance to watch it in theaters, but I’ll keep an eye out for it on Blu-ray.

‘Mud’

With a love for Southern Gothic stories that traces way back, I’m really looking forward to this latest thriller from Jeff Nichols, the genius behind the splendid ‘Take Shelter‘. The plot sounds like something conceived by Cormac McCarthy, but the style and theme feel like a cross between William Faulkner and Flannery O’Connor. Matthew McConaughey is very suave in his gentlemanly composure and intelligence, a romantic figure fallen from grace who feels scary and threatening. If the film lives up to its trailer, which I love, then I’ll be a happy camper.

‘Upside Down’

It seems like some kind of popular sci-fi trend right now to imagine an existence with two worlds. Both ‘Melancholia‘ and ‘Another Earth‘ did that recently. This trailer really plays up the love and romance angle of the plot. The movie marks the American debut of Latin-American filmmaker Juan Solanas, but I’m really intrigued by the concept and production design, which appear to take some inspiration from King Vidor’s ‘The Crowd’. Based on the look of it, this definitely deserves to be seen on the largest screen possible.
