The Trailer Park: Not Much Else Going On

The last couple of weeks have been pretty slow in terms of new movie trailers. With little else to discuss, let’s look at a few potentially interesting movies coming soon.

‘The Rover’

First, ‘Mad Max’ portrayed a post-apocalyptic future set in Australia. Now, David Michôd (who directed the excellent ‘Animal Kingdom’) envisions a violent and lawless near future in the Outback. Guy Pearce teams with Robert Pattinson for a dystopic story about survival and self-preservation. Of course, the teaser doesn’t really show or explain much, but it’s made well enough to pique my interest. I’ll be on the lookout for this in theaters.

‘Need for Speed’

Jesse Pinkman trades in his little red station wagon and his stash of “Blue Sky” for expensive flashy cars and the adrenaline rush of driving fast in this adaptation of the popular videogame series. To be perfectly honest, the trailer makes the revenge plot seem rather corny and too much like it belongs in the ‘Fast & Furious’ franchise, while at the same time highlighting the best action sequences. Director Scott Waugh proved that he knows what he’s doing with the decently entertaining ‘Act of Valor’, so I’ll eventually gives this a shot on Blu-ray, but I don’t feel like paying theater prices for this.

‘Transcendence’

Although I’m not entirely convinced by the trailer, I’m tempted to watch the directorial debut by Christopher Nolan’s longtime cinematographer Wally Pfister. The ghost-in-the-machine and artificial intelligence aspects of the story are ripe with possibilities. The script by Jack Paglen was famous for making 2012’s “Black List” of most promising unproduced screenplays, and I find Pfister’s insistence of shooting on anamorphic 35mm film and his refusal for digital methods rather intriguing. Nevertheless, this particular plot leaves me a bit hesitant. I’m not sure that I’ll catch the movie in cinemas, but I’ll surely watch it at some point.
