The Trailer Park: Secrets and Lies

A couple of new thrillers will hit theater screens fairly soon. Sadly, they don’t look all that thrilling. Is that just the fault of bad trailers?

‘Passion’

Because I like Brian De Palma and am a fan of erotic thrillers, especially when they’re creative and stylish, I’m naturally inclined to give this a chance. However, the preview for this remake of the 2010 French film ‘Love Crime’ (which originally starred Kristin Scott Thomas) doesn’t generate much interest from me – at least, not enough to pay for it in theaters. It could just be me, but the characters played by Rachel McAdams and Noomi Rapace seem pretty generic. In the end, I’ll probably trust De Palma enough to watch it on Blu-ray.

‘The Company You Keep’

Thrillers about investigative journalism often make great movies. Of course, they need to have a strong plot and a good director. Thankfully, Robert Redford has some experience with this sort of thing, and usually makes more great movies than not. (We’ll just pretend that ‘Lions for Lambs’ was some drunken fluke.) I can’t really say that I care to see Shia LaBeouf in the lead, or that I believe him as a journalist. But I could be wrong, and he might actually pull it off. With a strong supporting cast, this might be fun.

TIFF reviews say ‘Passion’ is an unintentional comedy. An 80s-era thriller with a score so ridiculously bad the audience giggled through it. That the movie only works as camp. Which is actually increasing my interest…

But if you want to see some existential nudity, Rachel McAdams and Olga Kurylenko both expose their sexy bits to Ben Affleck in Terence Malick’s ‘To the Wonder.’

  2. Haha, look at all those ‘Academy Award Winner/Nominee’ listings at the end of the ‘The Company You Keep’ trailer. Makes you feel sorry for the few actors that just had their name mentioned, and not their nomination/win.
