The Trailer Park: The Super Bowl Spots

Arguably, the best part about the Super Bowl is the commercials. Every year, movie studios love to join the fun with half-minute sneak peeks at their upcoming releases. For this week’s selection of previews, we’ll look at one teaser spot and two official trailers.

‘Transformers: Age of Extinction’

So much for Michael Bay’s claim that he was done with the ‘Transformers’ franchise. The guy who’s made a name for himself by turning mindless, over-the-top action into an assault of flashy images and pretty colors has clearly found his cash cow. This latest installment is proof that he’s suckling at that cow’s teat until it’s bone dry. Sadly, it also looks like more of the same garbage as the previous three, except bigger, louder and with four times the destruction. The only points of interest are seeing Mark Walhberg replace Shia LaBeouf and having our first glimpse of the Dinobots. If this movie turns into ‘Beast Wars’, I might check it out in theaters. At this point, I’m reserving judgment until we have a full official trailer.

‘3 Days to Kill’

I know that there are many fans out there who enjoy watching Amber Heard (especially guys), but I think she’s an awful actress and find her rather annoying. I have yet to see anything from her that remotely impresses me. In this McG production of a Luc Besson story, she promises to irritate me even more by playing some head-honcho secret super-agent that can apparently outsmart Kevin Costner. They really couldn’t find someone more believable for the role, or at least someone with better acting skills? Sorry, but Heard’s presence really pushes my suspension of disbelief to the limits. Needless to say, I plan to avoid this at all costs.

‘A Million Ways to Die in the West’

Seth MacFarlane’s latest raunchy comedy combines two of my favorite things: the Old West and Charlize Theron. Oh, yeah!

In all seriousness, this trailer had me in stitches and has sold me on seeing the movie – if not in theaters, then at some point on Blu-ray. Looking like a big hodgepodge of satire, stupid wisecracks and physical gags, I have good feeling about this movie, especially after maybe a few drinks to set the proper mindset. By the way, this is a Red Band trailer and the language makes it Not Safe for Work!

Seth Macfarlane is so awesome, I cant wait to see that and I will probably be seeing that in the theater which I dont usually do for comedies πŸ™‚

  2. Wow, that sure is one awesome trailer for β€˜A Million Ways to Die in the West’! The fact that it’s non-stop funny bodes well. That way, it could be that not even all funny bits are in the trailer.

    • The trailer is funny, but I find Seth MacFarlane very annoying as an actor. So much so that it’s actually distracting to see him on screen, like he simply has no business standing in front of the camera.

A few years back, he had a small role in the TV series FlashForward. It was a straight dramatic part. He had very few lines, and mostly just stood around in the middle of groups of other characters. Technically, he didn’t do anything “bad” as an actor. He delivered his lines properly without tripping over them or making any goofy faces. And yet, every time he appeared on screen, it was incredibly jarring. Like, “WTF is Seth MacFarlane doing there?!”

I don’t know if anyone else shares this problem, but Mrs. Z has the same reaction to him.

MacFarlane should stick to doing voiceover parts, IMO.

      • Jaimie Max

I totally agree with you Josh, I think had he cast someone else as the lead, I would want to see the movie. But with him as the main actor, I don’t know if I want to see the movie. He’s better at doing voices.

      • I understand your point, Josh. I, for one, have never seen anything by MacFarlane. No family Guy, no Ted, nothing. Which is a plus: for the time being, I have nothing against him as an actor.

Remember your Channing Tatum hatred prior to 21 Jump Street? πŸ˜‰

  3. I loved TED, but don’t really have any desire to see this new movie…I’d rather Seth stay behind the camera – not only is he a bad actor, he’s an ANNOYINGLY bad actor.
