The Trailer Park: Everybody Say “Jump!”

From the looks of our latest trio of new trailers, air-conditioned movie theaters will be showing plenty of good stuff to keep you cool and entertained during the hot summer of 2014.

‘Godzilla’

After the last, disastrous attempt at making an American version of the classic monster, it’s understandable that you might be hesitant or come with low expectations to this new ‘Godzilla’. But this preview, which is really just a teaser with only brief glimpses of the monster itself, has me genuinely excited, if not foaming at the mouth with anticipation. Although the music reminds me too much of Kubrick’s ‘2001’, it somehow works with the visuals here and really sets the mood. Best of all is hearing that iconic roar right at the end. I can’t wait!

‘Edge of Tomorrow’

I personally like Tom Cruise movies. The man gets the job done and, for the most part, makes easily-digestible, entertaining action flicks. For his latest starring role, Cruise teams up with ‘Bourne Identity’ director Doug Liman (of course, Liman also directed the idiotic ‘Jumper’) and the beautiful Emily Blunt. However, the visuals and story, based on a sci-fi novel by Hiroshi Sakurazaka, are the real selling points that have captured my attention. Based on the trailer alone, I’m willing to give this a chance on the big screen.

’22 Jump Street’

The first question that pops to mind when watching this preview is: “Do we really need a sequel for this?” A second later comes a resounding: “Hell, yeah!” The ’21 Jump Street’ movie was an incredibly awesome and hilarious surprise, and this follow-up looks to be just as good, if not maybe better. I love the explanation for the name change, along with a few other things, but the similar-sounding plot has me worried that the movie will just be a repeat of its predecessor. Still, I’m excited for this.

By the way, is it me or does Jonah Hill look a little like Mike Muir of Suicidal Tendencies when he wears the blue bandana?

  1. Loved 21 Jump Street. Hope the sequel is as funny.

The trailer for Godzilla is all kinds of awesome. Can the movie live up to it?

I’m on the fence about Edge of Tomorrow. That could go either way, but I’m cautiously optimistic.

    • Fully agree here 🙂 Thats pretty rare, only one I’m not sure about is Edge of Tomorrow, those suits look kind of bad IMO, but the story looks like fun and I’m a fan of most anything Cruise so, we will see I guess

  2. Love the new Jump Street trailer! Best bits could be in this clip, but I’m remaining optimistic. Never expected to see Rob Riggle and Dave Franco return. They’re not a part of the cast, according to IMDb.

  3. I agree with Josh that GODZILLA looks great, but EDGE OF TOMORROW looks borderline (is this the movie that was originally titled ALL YOU NEED IS KILL?). EDGE OF TOMORROW sounds like a TV soap opera, doesn’t it? 🙂

I guess I’m going to have to watch 21 JUMP STREET now. I probably should have picked it up when it was dirt-cheap on Black Friday.

    • Yes, Edge of Tomorrow has gone through several titles. It’s based on a Japanese novel called ‘All You Need Is Kill’, and that title sounds exactly like something translated from English to Japanese and back again. Other working titles were ‘We Mortals Are’ and ‘Live, Die, Repeat’. Admittedly, none of these are good options, but the title they eventually settled on was the most generic.

I’m inclined to give Doug Liman the benefit of the doubt, but Jumper was atrocious and the power armor seen in the trailer looks ridiculously pointless and impractical.

Why is it that apparently no sci-fi writers have yet figured out that future combat will not be fought by men in robot suits, but almost entirely by remotely-piloted drones? We’re already on the road to that.
