The Trailer Park: Women Can Be Badass Too!

This week we have ladies doing what they do best . . . kicking ass and taking names, especially when the men chasing after them deserve it! While the first seems to waste time before the character comes into her heroism, the others go on vigilante vengeance trips that look pretty cool.

‘In Time’

I’m not too sure what to make of this yet. With Roger Deakins doing the photography, ‘In Time’ sure looks slick and appealing. But after thinking about it for a while, the entire premise – no matter how original it may have sounded on paper – ultimately seems confusing and half-baked. Writer/director Andrew Niccol, who was once able to give sci-fi nerds some heady material in ‘Gattaca‘ and ‘The Truman Show‘, now delivers a concept that simply makes no sense. Time as currency? What?! Granted, the action looks good, but the logic behind Justin Timberlake and Amanda Seyfried running away from a loosely-based ‘Logan’s Run‘ plot is still asinine.

‘Haywire’

Always the unconventional filmmaker, Steven Soderbergh takes another relatively unknown actress and puts her in the leading role for this interesting-looking spy thriller. The last time, it was adult film star Sasha Grey for ‘The Girlfriend Experience‘. This time around, Soderbergh gives mixed martial-arts fighter Gina Carano the opportunity to show off her amazing skills along with her beauty. Although the photography looks rather dull and ugly, the movie looks entertaining, like a female version of the Jason Bourne flicks. It also features an ensemble cast that includes Ewan McGregor, Michael Fassbender, Antonio Banderas, Bill Paxton and Michael Douglas. The best part of the whole preview is watching Channing Tatum get his ass whooped in the opening scenes.

‘Sushi Girl’

With a great song from Roxy Music called “ In Every Dream Home a Headache” playing in the background, I am loving pretty much every aspect of this trailer. It even features Mark Hamill in a fat suit and an ugly blonde wig, so how wrong can this be? The photography is obviously emulating 1970s grindhouse exploitation flicks, and the story seems to be very much old-fashioned vigilante vengeance. Director Kern Saxton, who also co-wrote the original screenplay, is making his feature-length debut with this crime drama. It seems like a sincere, straightforward flick, but I’m sure the movie has its tongue firmly pressed on the cheek. For what it’s worth, I’ll be there to see Hamill, Tony Todd, Michael Biehn, Sonny Chiba and Danny Trejo in all-out brawl. Oh, by the way, Noah Hathaway from ‘The Neverending Story‘ plays the lead.

‘The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo’ (2011)

Here’s another cool-looking preview with a cool-sounding song playing loudly over random images. It seems only fitting that a remake/adaptation film would use a song which happens to also be a remake. (Trent Reznor & Karen O cover the Led Zeppelin classic “Immigrant Song” – a personal favorite.)

Still, the crime thriller looks very slick and stylish, with that perfect blend of sinister moodiness and a terrifically compelling mystery which David Fincher seems best at. By the looks of it, the movie feels like it might actually please even the most rabid of fans, and I do consider myself one of them. I love the novels! However, one thing still has me worried. Daniel Craig, Stellan Skarsgaard and Christopher Plummer are great actors, so I’m sure they won’t disappoint. Rooney Mara, on the other hand, is an awful, inexpressive actress who hasn’t done anything of note. But I have to put my trust in Fincher. He obviously seems to think she’s capable of pulling off the awesome Lisbeth Salander character.

  1. The Haywire trailer isn’t thrilling me. It just looks like “Bourne with Boobs.” But I’m willing to give Steven Soderbergh the benefit of the doubt if he wants to try something different.

In Time has quite possibly the dumbest premise for a movie I have ever heard in my entire life. That looks like a giant p.o.s.

  2. The Sushi Girl trailer makes me feel like it’s 1995 all over again and every young hack in Hollywood is desperately trying to mimic Tarantino.

Dragon Tattoo… Teal snow, David Fincher? Really, teal snow? Gah.

  3. Film Threatener

If Sushi Girl is half as cool as the trailer looks, I’m all in! Friends saw scenes at SDCC in July and said it was off the hook! The original GWDT was amazing – this one looks like it could be cool.
