The Trailer Park: Oz in a Fun Pack

In today’s movie trailers, Nickelodeon Studios gives Josh Schwartz a chance to direct a PG-13 teen comedy, while Sam Raimi reveals the origins of the wonderful Wizard of Oz.

Fun Size

Did I miss something here? When did Nickelodeon Studios suddenly become the place for teen comedy with a slightly raunchy edge? Granted, this is nothing close to ‘Porky’s’ or even ‘American Pie’ in terms of raunchiness, but according to the trailer, the movie has a strong PG-13 vibe to it. It seems to also have darker edge (however slight) with the little-brother-gone-missing-to-party-with-adults angle. ‘Chuck’ creator Josh Schwartz makes his directorial debut. Hopefully, the Halloween comedy will live up to what the trailer promises.

Oz: The Great and Powerful

I find the start of this teaser to be a rather cheesy homage to ‘The Wizard of Oz’, but also cleverly amusing for that same reason. The movie, which is intended as a prequel to the classic musical, features a strong cast and looks highly imaginative. It also reminds me of Tim Burton’s ‘Alice in Wonderland’, which is sort of disappointing because I didn’t care for that one. Most surprising is that Sam Raimi has directed, because the movie looks nothing like his usual stuff. That could be the film’s blessing or its demise. Still, I like what I see. As of right now, I’m intrigued.

I’ve been looking forward to Oz for a while now! I cannot wait for this!

I tell you what I would love to see is maybe a mini-series that is actually based on the Oz books. The movies I have seen so far seemed to only be based on a few elements of the books. I would love to see Trot, Button Bright, Betsey, Hank, and Ozma (actually, Ozma was in Return to Oz, but that movie was awful).

  2. I felt like such an old man when I saw the trailer for Fun Size. I was appalled at the adult nature of the film that was advertised as the latest high-school level film about crazy holidays and such. I thought, isn’t Nickelodeon a channel for kids, still??

The trailer’s pay-off shot is when the station wagon filled with teens is nearly crushed and accosted by a giant motorized chicken that essentially humps the back of the car. I was condemning this film as another nail in the coffin of the future of our world.

But Chelsea Handler is in the movie, playing the part of the heroine’s mother, so I guess I answered my own question. This movie is gonna be seriously raunchy and pushing the boundaries of what is appropriate for underage kids.
