The Trailer Park: Summer Movies Are Coming!

It’s barely even the start of winter and already we’re seeing trailers for next year’s summer blockbusters. While there are many to choose from, only one can really be considered the most anticipated film of the entire year. (No, it’s not ‘Titanic’ or ‘The Phantom Menace’ converted into 3D.)

The Expendables 2

I thought ‘The Expendables‘ was an entertaining throwback to the old-school action flicks of the 1980s, but nothing truly spectacular or witty enough to warrant a sequel. But then this teaser comes along and I actually find myself smiling with giddy excitement. When the names Norris, Van Damme, Willis and Schwarzenegger scream across the screen (and seemingly in important roles), I instantly feel as if this follow-up might live up to the aspirations of the first. The teaser has done its job and piqued my interest. I’m willing to give this one a chance.

The Dark Knight Rises

Like so many out there, I’m really stoked to see this. As I watched the preview, my eyes were glued to the screen and suddenly felt saddened. Not because the film looks bad – but because it ended too soon. I want more! I love the look of Bane and the fact that he says very few words, which are actually rather chilling. I absolutely love Selina Kyle taking part in this second sequel, especially hearing her diatribe whispered into Wayne’s ear. Heck, I pretty much love everything I’m seeing in this teaser trailer so far. Christopher Nolan’s trilogy conclusion is, in all honesty, my most anticipated film of 2012. July can’t get here soon enough. I so badly want to see this!

‘The Hobbit’ trailer made my secret places 17% more tingly than ‘The Dark Knight Rises,’ but I’m really enjoying the entire winter teaser flood.

  2. G.I. Joe: Retaliation. As The Rock has said, “Boots to asses.”

To most of us, a great summer trailer has to have one jaw-dropping, spine tingling, oh-my-God-did-they-just-do-that moment. Seeing the Cobra banners unfurl over the White House blew me away, something that Hines Ward’s run and Gollum’s “Bagginsssssessss…” just didn’t do, and I vastly prefer the Batman & LOTR movies to GIJ:ROCobra. (Granted, The Hobbit is a Dec. release)

Unless the tone of that movie goes a lot more cartoony than the trailer lets on, G.I. Joe’s sequel is my movie of the summer, and possibly the year. Never thought I would say that.

Honorable Mention: Avengers for not showing the “other” baddies who help Loki and shoot all those lasers. (trying to stay spoiler-free here for everyone)

  3. “A storm is coming…” is definitely one of my least favorite movie cliches. From the comical football tragedy to the hordes of prisoners toting assault rifles, this Batman film looks much closer in tone to Batman Begins than The Dark Knight.

I’m looking forward to it, but my hopes aren’t terribly high.
