The Trailer Park: The Future of Earth

Teaser previews for next year’s summer season are coming in, and deliver a good deal to be excited about. Shyamalan throws Will Smith and son into harm’s way, and Tom Cruise must work with Morgan Freeman to save humanity. Meanwhile, J.J. Abrams brings us another Enterprising adventure .

‘After Earth’

The trailer for the latest M. Night Shyamalan feature does little to generate enthusiasm. That may have something to do with the director himself, but I like the idea behind the plot. The story comes from videogame designer Gary Whitta, who recently found success with his script for ‘The Book of Eli‘, but Shyamalan, as always, got his hands on it and tweaked it to his liking before passing to Stephen Gaghan. Still, I like the visual design of the preview, so I may end up giving it a chance in theaters come June.

‘Oblivion’

I’m an unapologetic Tom Cruise fan, and always have been. So, it goes without saying that I’m very interested to check out this sci-fi actioner on the big screen. What could be better than watching Morgan Freeman playing opposite Cruise, both caught in some apocalyptic future full of mystery, suspense and conspiracy theories? ‘Tron: Legacy’ director Joseph Kosinski serves as writer, producer and director. Given his virtuoso talent for CGI spectacle, I’m feeling confident that the movie will be lots of fun.

‘Star Trek into Darkness’

Of these three trailers, this follow up to J.J. Abrams’s ‘Star Trek‘ reboot is definitely the strongest. It has me wishing that May was already here. The same cast returns, and the addition of Benedict Cumberbatch has me thrilled. He’s a brilliant actor, and I’m sure his performance will only make the film better. One mystery still remains, however: What’s Cumberbatch’s role in the sequel? Is he supposed to be a clone of Khan, or is he Kirk’s friend Gary Mitchell, as several rumors have suggested? The actor is credited as John Harrison, but who the hell is that? Considering that the last film established an entirely new timeline in the ‘Star Trek’ universe, the filmmakers might be going in a different direction while allowing rumors to circulate as a diversion. In either case, the preview looks outstanding, and I can’t wait to find out what the deal is with Cumberbatch’s character.

  1. Hilarious that the After Earth trailer doesn’t mention Shyamalan at all. His name is marketing poison at this point. The preview actually looks fairly decent. The fact that he’s letting someone else write the screenplay may be a good sign… maybe.

I consider the Star Trek Into Darkness trailer the least interesting of the three. The fact that it is a Star Trek movie should be a draw for me—even though I didn’t much care for the last one—but this trailer barely looked like a Trek and didn’t feel like one at all. (Is that the same awful “music” from the trailers for the last Transformers débâcle? Surely something less off-putting could have been found…)

I’m not enthusiastic about the other two flicks (indeed, Will Smith and Tom Cruise tend to push me away), but they look somewhat interesting.

  3. About ‘Oblivion’:

    a) why mention “producers from Rise of the Planet of the Apes” (not THE producers, but “producers”) and not Kosinski? I would have expected some sort of “from the visionary Tron: Legacy director” line?

    b) Tom Cruise’s character is called “Jack”? After “Jack Reacher”? Wow, thrilling imagination! And likely to confuse moviegoers.

    c) One of the enemies sounds like a Tusken Raider!
