The Trailer Park: Real-Life History

There’s nothing wrong with bio-pics that mix a good chunk of action with their drama. Doing so often makes for better entertainment, and the next two previews look quite promising.

‘Argo’

Even though I don’t consider ‘The Town’ to be anything remarkable, I still believe that Ben Affleck has proven himself a very fine director thus far. ‘Argo’ looks to be another great film from an A-list actor who seems to be the butt of too many jokes. Based on a recently declassified CIA operation about the attempt to rescue diplomats held hostage during the 1979 Iranian Revolution, the movie is sure to grab the attention of a large audience. The trailer does its magic well and makes the story quite gripping.

‘Gangster Squad’

I’m a little conflicted with this trailer. The plot, which is based on the 2008 newspaper story by Paul Lieberman, sounds like a great deal of pulpy fun, and the cast looks awesome. I’m a fan of Sean Penn, and to see him play the real-life gangster Mickey Cohen is sure to please me to no end. Even the visual style and direction of Ruben ‘Zombieland’ Fleischer looks incredible. But what’s with the completely out of place hip-hop music? The same goes for Emma Stone. She doesn’t seem right for a period piece. And the preview makes Ryan Gosling’s performance seem amateurish and wooden. Some parts of this trailer I like, while others, I wonder who edited (or rather piecemealed) this together.

‘Gangster Squad’ looks like a joke.

‘Argo’ looks fantastic. It’s interesting to see what Affleck has done in terms of writing and directing since he and Matt Damon won the Academy Award for William Goldman’s er…I mean… their script for Good Will Hunting. Meanwhile, behind the camera Damon has done… nothing?

    • William Goldman denies the ghost-writing conspiracy theories. He says that Affleck and Damon asked him for some advice about the ending, and that was the extent of his involvement with the movie.

Of course, that’s exactly what someone who’d been paid for his silence would say… 🙂

I’d heard other versions where he was hired by Harvey Weinstein to help them with rewrites and pushed them to drop the whole CIA twist. I’ve always been pretty dubious. I think he took it home one weekend for an extensive polish as a “favor.”

‘Argo’ looks like a boring movie with great trailer music.

If Affleck didn’t direct, he’d be unemployed.

Damon is so money he gets to star in the new Blomkamp.

‘Elysium’ has already started screening for test audiences, and the synopsis just came out.

“In the year 2159 two classes of people exist: the very wealthy who live on a pristine man-made space station called Elysium, and the rest, who live on an overpopulated, ruined Earth.

Secretary Rhodes (Jodie Foster), a hard line government official, will stop at nothing to enforce anti-immigration laws and preserve the luxurious lifestyle of the citizens of Elysium. That doesn’t stop the people of Earth from trying to get in, by any means they can.

When unlucky Max (Matt Damon) is backed into a corner, he agrees to take on a daunting mission that if successful will not only save his life, but could bring equality to these polarized worlds.”

Which sounds like ‘The Island’ run through the projector backwards.
