Transformers: The Last Knight

SteelBook Alert: Knight Moves

Upcoming Blu-ray and UHD SteelBooks are all about cars cars cars. We’ve got cars driven by superhero spies, cars driven by babies (wait, that can’t be right), and cars that turn into robots. Also, a giant monkey. I guess they can’t all fit the theme.

‘Transformers: The Last Knight’ (USA)

Available at: Best Buy (Blu-ray or UHD)
Release date: TBA
Price: $29.99 Blu-ray / $34.99 UHD

Despite threatening to leave the franchise a couple of times already, Michael Bay keeps churning out ‘Transformers’ sequels. His latest is reportedly his dumbest yet, and thus far has been his lowest-grossing at the box office. Nevertheless, the compulsion to complete a franchise will be very powerful for many collectors.

Best Buy will have separate Blu-ray and Ultra HD SKUs for the SteelBook. The case itself is identical either way. Neither includes the 3D version of the movie.

The artwork is pretty standard ‘Transformers’ fare, perhaps even a little less ugly than other SteelBooks for the franchise. (See here, here, here and here.) I’m not a fan of that goofy text font, though.

‘Transformers: The Last Knight’ (UK)

Available at: Zavvi
Release date: TBA
Price: $43.22

For a brief window, UK retailer Zavvi had its own Ultra HD SteelBook for this movie, allegedly featuring different artwork that makes it look more like a 1980s fantasy flick. The case sold out in a blink, but I wouldn’t worry about that. The image states that the artwork is subject to change, and I feel confident that the final release will look identical to the Best Buy version anyway.

‘The Fate of the Furious’

Available at: Best Buy (Blu-ray or UHD)
Release date: July 11, 2017
Price: $22.99 Blu-ray / $27.99 UHD

How is it possible that we now have eight ‘Fast and Furious’ movies? The first to be made following the death of star Paul Walker didn’t quite hit the franchise high reached by ‘Furious 7’, but came awfully close thanks to a huge turnout by international audiences. Movies this simplistic transcend language barriers.

The SteelBook looks pretty generic, but I suppose that’s an attempt to enforce consistency with previous SteelBooks for the series.

Fate of the Furious SteelBook

‘Kong: Skull Island’

Available at: Best Buy
Release date: July 18, 2017
Price: $39.99

The second entry in the giant monsters cinematic universe from Legendary Pictures and Warner Bros. didn’t perform quite as well as 2014’s ‘Godzilla’ reboot. Reactions ranged from calling it a delightful B-movie to a stupid piece of crap. Regardless, it made enough money that a Godzilla vs. Kong mash-up is still in the works.

Best Buy’s SteelBook will be a comprehensive package including Ultra HD, Blu-ray and 3D, which is nice. The cover isn’t great, unfortunately. The image is a blow-up of a small portion of the theatrical poster. This may be a case where I prefer the art on the regular keepcase editions better.

Kong: Skull Island SteelBook

‘Baby Driver’

Available at: Available at: Amazon UK or Zavvi
Release date: TBA
Price: £19.99 (Amazon UK) or $26.19 (Zavvi)

The new cinematic confection from director Edgar Wright has been getting terrific reviews and word-of-mouth. I can’t wait to see it.

Not sure how I feel about the pink SteelBook, though.

I got my eye on the Kong: Skull Island steelbook for the content. It isn’t hideous, but I like the green smoke pic better. Still though, getting 3D, standard blu, and 4K all in one convenient case is too tempting to pass up.

I got out of the steelbook collecting game recently, but that Transformers artwork is pretty damn cool (even if the movie is dogshit according to almost everyone). I loved Skull Island but the art is a little dull imo. Hopefully the standard blu ( which I’ll pick up eventually) has something more pleasing to the eye.

Kong is Warner Bros and Warner has yet to package UHD with 3D domestically, I think. I hope this happens, but I’ll thinking this Steelbook release will be revised.

Still don’t quite believe that 3D will be included, and still despise that Kong dong straddling the hilltop cover art…
…but the scarcity has moved me to put an order in.

Checked every few days, and finally a store within 20 miles has availability for in-store pickup.

  4. I love the ‘Baby Driver’ art and hope that we get it in the US. It’s a pretty minimalist design, but it doesn’t lack creativity. I love the car-bullet and the sound waves as tire tracks. They exude fun and danger, but the blood spatter gives off a real threat.

    I want it.

So let me understand this. You hated the Logan steelbook artwork but aren’t sure how you feel about the dreadful Baby Driver artwork?

And did I mention the Baby Driver artwork is dreadful?

In defense of the Baby Driver steelbook, it’s very loyal to the onesheets that have been used promoting the movie.
