Rampage

SteelBook Alert: Gorilla Warfare

Just on the eve of the latest blockbuster action movie starring The Rock, you can order a SteelBook copy of the last blockbuster action movie starring The Rock. Say what you will about the quality of the scripts he chooses, there’s no denying the guy’s work ethic.

‘Rampage’

Allegedly based on an old 8-bit video game that few people likely remember, the spectacle of Dwayne Johnson facing off against giant animals in a destruction-porn VFX showcase was enough to sell over $400 million worth of tickets.

The SteelBook art is pretty basic, using one of the main poster designs with Johnson standing next to a big gorilla. It’s nothing special, but I’m sure it’s far preferable to the Pop Art and comic book art designs that the studio undoubtedly considered.

‘Ready Player One’

Infused with video game, movie, and pop culture references from the 1980s, Steven Spielberg’s $175 million adaptation of the novel by Ernie Cline wasn’t quite the cultural event it had been hyped as, but did well enough at the box office that a sequel is still in discussion.

The front cover of the Blu-ray and UHD SteelBooks is, once again, thankfully free of Pop Art or comic book art nonsense and looks pretty nice. I’m not a fan of the close-up of the ugly mo-cap character marring the interior, but the case will spend most of its time closed anyway.

Ready Player One UHD SteelBook

Over in the UK, Zavvi briefly listed a 3D SteelBook with different temp art (noted as TBC on the image). That one has already sold out, but if you’re interested, it may be worth checking back closer to the August 8th release. Zavvi could reopen the purchase window if buyers cancel orders and some copies free up.

That’s odd – BOTH movies are references to 80’s arcade games…why would you think Rampage obscure and not RPO? They are both referencing the same games form the same era.
Rampage was a HUGE arcade hit. No more obscure than any arcade game referenced in RPO.

Rampage is supposedly adapted from that video game. The studio spent $120 million to make a movie based on a title that has virtually no name recognition or IP value today. That’s a very odd decision.

Ready Player One isn’t based on any one game. It merely throws out a thousand pop culture references to all sorts of old movies and games, some popular and some obscure. That’s a different thing entirely.

I enjoyed rampage I’ll be picking up the steel book I’m undecided on which one though leaning heavily towards the Blu-ray combo because I don’t have a 4k tv yet
