We know that Nintendo’s hot new glasses-free 3-D gaming handheld is on the way, but Nintendo still hasn’t announced anything about a price or a release date for the system’s U.S. launch. It could be seen as promising news then that GameStop is now taking preorders for the system.
Sure, GameStop is notorious for taking preorders before a product is ready or even exists, but the 3DS preorder could offer a bit of insight.
The 3DS will be available in Japan this March at a price equivalent to around $300, but it’s generally agreed that we’ll be seeing it cheaper in the States. Popular opinion, for what it’s worth, is that we’ll be getting the 3DS just a few months after Japan.
GameStop hasn’t given a specific price or a release date for the system, but it seems promising that preorders are now being accepted. If getting Nintendo’s new handheld is a must for you, it might not be a bad idea to head over and put down a bit of cash.

I had a Pre-order for Duke Nukem Forever 6 years ago at EB Games (Now Gamestop)
Pre-order just means Gamestop get to make interest off your money until the game/system come out.

GameStop takes pre-orders very early for two reasons. The first is so they can hold onto your money for at least 6 months before they ever pay the publishers for the actual product. That’s 6 months to gain interest on money that they haven’t really properly earned yet. The second reason is they count on your bad memory. Every Gamestop holds onto an average of $1500 of forgotten pre-order money. With 5000 GameStop locations around the world, that’s 7.5 million dollars that GameStop is in no way legally obligated to remind you about. So if you must pre-order, keep in mind that you’re putting extra money in GameStop’s pockets.
