There’s at least one exciting original series on the way to the Netflix stream, and maybe another. Yet it still feels like we’re losing a lot more than we’re gaining these days. The end of July brings us a few cool movies that were missing on streaming, but we lose a lot of good stuff, including one film so bad it just has to be watched.
Leaving the Stream
- ‘The Bourne Identity’ (8/1): I’m just going to assume that you’ve seen ‘The Bourne Identity‘ because I cannot conceive of a reason not to. It’s the film that made Matt Damon into something it seemed like he never could be – a legitimate action star. It also features Clive Owen, which is awesome. Because Clive Owen is awesome.
- ‘Sid & Nancy’ (8/1): I’ll shamefacedly admit that, as big of a punk rocker as I was in high school, I never did get around to watching ‘Sid & Nancy‘. You’d better believe that I’m going to get to it before the first of August, though. Getting a glimpse into the life of Sid Vicious and getting to see Gary Oldman act is a one-two punch of greatness.
- ‘Can’t Stop the Music’ (8/1): This movie stars Steve Guttenberg, which should be enough to give it serious consideration as a terrible flick. It also stars Bruce Jenner. I know, right? That combo is bad enough, but to finish it all up, ‘Can’t Stop the Music‘ also stars The Village People. Bam! Watch this cult camp classic with some friends around. You’ll be glad you did.
Entering the Stream
- ‘Pitch Black’ (7/31): Blah, blah, blah, prerequisite Vin Diesel joke, blah. Sure, he’s starred in a lot of crap, but that doesn’t mean every movie he makes is crap. Most are, but ‘Pitch Black‘ isn’t. It’s an excellent sort of sci-fi horror mash-up that should really have helped to launch a much better career. But then ‘The Fast and the Furious’ happened.
- ‘Lethal Weapon 2’ (8/1): Better known as “The one where it starts to get funny instead of all serious and sad and stuff.” ‘Lethal Weapon 2‘ is a fine flick just before the series gets really bad, and long before it gets good again. Pesci’s presence takes things up a notch, and Gibson and Glover are at their best here.

If you have an HD-DVD player, you probably already have the Bourne Identity. It was like included with every single player ever sold. I put off watching it for months, because I thought it was going to be a crap movie like the other movies included with my player were. To my surprise, it was quite good, and now have the whole trilogy on HD-DVD.

Guys, you really have to stop saying we are losing more than we are getting. Most of the time these things are removed is simply because they haven’t finished renewing deals with the providers. Usually within a month or so the same material comes back, sometimes better than ever or as part as a huge block of new material.
And while I can understand not being overwhelmed every week, it appears you missed the BIGGEST of the releases from this week. How did you miss all of the seasons so far of “MAD MEN!!!!!!”. I never got to watch it on AMC because I cut the cord a few years back and just didn’t have the urge to rent the Blu-Rays after the fact. But now I’m really sorry I waited.
Still, how did you guys not catch that?

AuthorBut we ARE losing more than we’re gaining! There’s a legitimate reason sure, but that doesn’t change the fact that plenty of good stuff is coming off the stream and so little is being added. Still, I’m a Netflix evangelist. It’s how I watch all my movies and I’m definitely not out to bash the service :p
As far as Mad Men goes – well okay, I did just totally miss that!
