Leaving the Stream: Week of September 26, 2010

The beginning of October means another huge shift in titles at Netflix. Don’t worry too much about the seasons of ‘Lost’ and ’30 Rock’ you see sliding off, because the new deal between Netflix and NBC Universal will almost certainly have those back on soon. You’re going to lose some classics, though. So head over to Netflix fast.

The Bad News Bears (10/1)

No, this isn’t the Billy Bob Thornton version. This is the real one. The good one. The classic. It has Walter Matthau, plenty of beer, and an irreverence that can’t be found in kids’ movies these days. ‘The Bad News Bears‘ also features a young Jackie Earl Haley, who you may recognize as Rorschach from ‘Watchmen.’

Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (10/1)

If you want to see the original ‘Star Trek’ crew at their peak, this is the movie to watch. While ‘First Contact’ and the newly revamped ‘Star Trek’ have their merits, ‘The Wrath of Khan‘ is still the best film of the bunch. The effects may have aged, but the classic story never will. Friday the 13th 1-6 (10/1)

It will be an absolute travesty if the ‘Friday the 13th‘ series doesn’t get picked back up by the time Halloween rolls around. Still, if you’ve a desire to see some of that gloriously cheesy ’80s horror we’ve all come to know and love, then this is the time to do it. You’ve got until Friday the 1st, a date that didn’t have the decency to come 12 days later so I could make a joke about it. (Blu-ray Review)

On my queue for this week: ‘Ponyo,’ ‘The Princess and the Frog,’ and ‘The Burbs
