Leaving the Stream: Week of October 10th, 2010

The bad news: We’re losing a good chunk of movies on Netflix Instant Watch this week. The good news: Most of them aren’t very good. Still, there are a few you’ll want to get around to.

Bolt (10/16)

All right, hear me out on this one. ‘Bolt‘ isn’t the best digitally animated movie to come out in the last few years, and it certainly doesn’t hold a candle to proper Pixar movies, but it’s not bad. Look past the Miley Cyrus and John Travolta voices to the Nick Swardson, the Diedrich Bader, and most importantly, the Malcom McDowell. It’s definitely worth checking out. (Blu-ray review)

Fast Times at Ridgemont High (10/15)

Before he was Jimmy Markum in ‘Mystic River,’ and long before his portrayal of Harvey Milk, Sean Penn brought us Jeff Spicoli. OK, so Spicoli might not be the most demanding role. The character may be a bit one-dimensional, but ‘Fast Times at Ridgemont High‘ is just so much funnier than ‘Mystic River.’ The movie also features Judge Reinhold, Phoebe Cates, and Jennifer Jason Leigh.(Blu-ray review)

Wild Hearts Can’t Be Broken (10/19)

So you saw ‘Secretariat’ and you just can’t get enough? Well luckily, Disney made more than a few horse movies, including ‘Wild Hearts Can’t be Broken.’  It’s about a girl with a wild heart, that totally can’t be broken. It stars Gabrielle Anwar as Sonora Webster, who dreams of jumping horses off of a high dive at carnivals. You know, when you watch the movie, it seems like a much loftier goal.

This is one reason why streaming will not replace physical media anytime soon. People will never trust it to be there only source of movies if those movies can disappear at anytime. Looks like all the Sesame Street stuff was removed recently as well, my daughter loved watching that stuff.
