Criterion Collection on Sale Again. What Will You Buy This Time?

Criterion collectors, did you miss out on that big 50% off sale that Barnes & Noble held last month? Or, did you buy big then, only to find that Criterion has released a couple of interesting titles in the meantime? Well, don’t fret, because Deep Discount is having its own sale on Criterion Collection discs that’s almost as good.

Now through September 1st, Deep Discount is holding a Back to School Sale that claims to offer a 45% discount (from MSRP) on “Over 450 Criterion Titles on DVD and Blu-ray.” If not quite as good as what Barnes & Noble offered, it’s close. And it’s certainly a lot better than the Criteiron prices you’ll find on Amazon these days. (Seriously, shortly after receiving notice of this sale, I also got a “Save on Criterion Collection New Releases” notice from Amazon, advertising barely 10-25% discounts.)

Now would be a good time to pick up ‘Black Orpheus‘ or ‘Crumb‘, both of which were released after the end of the last sale. Not to mention anything else you might have missed out on last time.

Unfortunately, Criterion’s next new title (‘Breathless‘) won’t be released until September 14th, after the end of this sale.

Damn. I was looking at picking up House which some buddies have strongly recommended, but it looks like it’s only about 2 bucks cheaper than Amazon and B&N. Shipping is free though so that’s something I guess.

I didn’t pick up Ben Button during the B&N sale because B&N doesn’t sell their blu rays and DVDs with slip cases, and there’s no way I’m buying this one without a slip. I might pick it up from this sale.

I’m planning on buying Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence, The Thing Red Line and House, but those aren’t being released for a while. Bummer.

Is that true of online sales as well, or just in stores? I’ve read that the rationale for throwing away the slipcovers in stores is that the security device is attached to the sleeve, and it’s easy for a shoplifter to remove the sleeve and walk out with the rest of the case.

That obviously wouldn’t be a concern for an online sale. And I doubt that the fulfillment center goes to the extra effort of removing slipcovers. But I also don’t believe I’ve ever ordered anything from them that should have a slipcover anyway, so I can’t say for certain.
