‘Puss in Boots’ dropped a mere 23% in its third weekend, bringing in another $25 million. The ‘Shrek’ spin-off hopped over the $100 million mark, but didn’t make enough to stop an epic underdog from taking first.
Predicted to debut with $20.5 million, ‘Immortals‘ blew past the competition to claim the #1 spot with $32 million. This gives Relativity Media its best-ever opening. ‘Immortals’ also earned big overseas bucks, with a worldwide opening box office total of $68 million. 66% of the action adventure’s revenue came from 3D showings.
As of now, Adam Sandler’s gender-bending comedy Jack and Jill has a $500,000 lead on ‘Puss in Boots’, but the two could easily flip when the final totals are announced this afternoon. With $26 million, ‘Jack and Jill’ opened half a million dollars above expectations.
Clint Eastwood’s bio-pic ‘J. Edgar‘ debuted right alongside studio predictions with $11.5 million. Despite premiering on Wednesday in select cities, the Leonardo DiCaprio vehicle failed to open on par with Eastwood’s other recent flicks.
Cannes award winner ‘Melancholia‘ featured a healthy opening with $265,000 on only 19 screens. With $50,800 on 12 screens, Werner Herzog’s latest documentary Into the Abyss didn’t open quite as strongly, but still did well.
In its fourth weekend, ‘Paranormal Activity 3‘ joined ‘Puss in Boots’ to cross the $100 million mark. Meanwhile, ‘The Three Musketeers‘ dropped out of the rankings with $495,000, which brings its four-week box office total to $19.1 million. Needless to say, that’s not too good for $75 million movie.

“J. Edgar‘ debuted right alongside studio predictions with $11.5 million”
– Really? Warner expected on an $11.5 million opening of a film by Clint Eastwood with script written by Dustin Black? They must have figured out what a real bomb they had on their hands. Too bad for Eastwood & Black, but couldn’t have happened to a more deserving studio.

Warners is doing just fine. They crossed the billion dollar mark in box office revenue this weekend. Considering they haven’t done that in several years, I think it’s fair to assume that they’re going to be all right.

It was actually Universal that crossed the billion dollar mark this weekend. Not WB.

Damn. You’re right. I failed and got my studios crossed. Sad face.

Well, I wasn’t suggesting Warner would be going out of business overnight. Any loss from J. Edgar will be made up a couple hundred times by Hangover 2 (has 3 been announced yet?). Just sayin’ a box office bomb couldn’t happen to a more deserving studio. Don’t like them for a number of reasons, but most recently for their war on renters.

Oh, I didn’t even realize Three Musketeers had opened yet. It’s not showing at any of the first-run theaters in my area, and hasn’t gotten to the Dollar Theater yet. Not sure how I missed it.
I wanted to see Puss In Boots this weekend, but my friend talked me into seeing J Edgar instead. I just want to know how a movie about the FBI and the man who founded it ended up being the most boring movie I have seen in years. They had one of the greatest pieces of subject material ever, and they produced that? Avoid that movie like the plague!
