Weekend Box Office: Dinosaurs (Still) Rule the Earth

While Pixar’s latest release had a very successful opening weekend, those Jurassic dinosaurs continue to break records.

After just ten days, ‘Jurassic World‘ has grossed a massive $398.2 million domestically thanks to a better-than-expected holdover. Dropping just 51% in attendance, the movie’s sophomore weekend resulted in an additional $102 million – and the success doesn’t stop there. Overseas, the fourth entry in the ‘Jurassic Park’ franchise is playing in all markets but one (Japan) and continues to dominate. The international totals now sit at $583.1 million, which gives the film a ten-day worldwide income of $981.3 million. Earlier this year, ‘Furious 7’ became the fastest picture to hit $1 billion in 17 days. ‘Jurassic World’ ought to break that record on day 11 or 12.

Even though Pixar’s last few films performed at a lower-than-usual numbers, the studio’s latest picture raises the bar for both quality and monetary success. ‘Inside Out‘ opened with Pixar’s second-highest debut (‘Toy Story 3‘ holds the Pixar record with $110.3 million) and also became the highest grossing non-sequel of all time. From nearly 4,000 locations, Pete Docter’s imaginative family flick earned $91 million. With great word-of-mouth, exceptionally positive critic reviews and no new kids’ movies slated to open until July 10 (‘Minions’), ‘Inside Out’ ought to have long legs.

In its third week, Paul Feig’s ‘Spy‘ dropped to the #3 spot, but had great week-over-week traction. The picture fell less than 33% in attendance with a $10.5 million weekend that pushed its 17-day domestic total up to $74.3 million. Overseas, the R-rated comedy has made $56.5 million, giving it a worldwide total of $130.8 million.

San Andreas‘ slipped another rank, but had even better holdover this weekend than ‘Spy’. Now four weeks into its run, the disaster flick only dropped 23%. Its $8.2 million earned pushed its domestic total up to $132.2 million. Overseas, it has now grossed $282 million, for a worldwide total of $414.2 million.

Rounding out the Top 5 was Open Road’s new indie film ‘Dope‘. Without much in the way of pre-release marketing, the Sundance hit opened to a lower-than-predicted $6 million. Playing on 2,000 screens, the resulting $3,006 per-screen average isn’t very good.

Sony Pictures Classics’ ‘Infinitely Polar Bear‘ got off to a decent start. From five locations, the Mark Ruffalo drama earned $47,000, for a per-screen average of $9,400. While not great, the outcome should be good enough to expand the film’s platform release over the next few weeks.

David Gordon Green’s ‘Manglehorn‘, on the other hand, didn’t fare so well. From three locations, the Al Pacino drama only drew $13,000 and a per-screen average of $4,333.

  1. I saw an article yesterday where the writer was complaining that JURASSIC WORLD becoming one of the most successful movies of all time is bad for the movie business, because it’s not a ‘quality’ film…as if AVATAR and TITANIC are great pieces of storytelling. 🙂

    • That’s HORRIBLE!!!! Why isn’t this all over the news (in my country). He scored my favourite animated movie ever, ‘The Land Before Time’.
