Poll: Which Blu-rays Will You Buy in the November 2017 Criterion Sale?

Even though these things run every July and November, this month’s Criterion Collection sale at Barnes & Noble somehow snuck on me and I neglected to write about it last week. Because some of our readers have told me that these posts are helpful, consider this a reminder to break open your wallet.

At each of these B&N sales, I try to compile a list of recent Criterion titles that are now eligible for the discount pricing. The following is not intended to be a comprehensive listing of every Criterion Blu-ray. This is merely a reference to those discs issued since B&N’s previous sale ended on August 7th, 2017. If you plan to buy older Criterion releases during this sale, vote “Other” and tell us which ones in the Comments section.

Starting last Wednesday the 1st through November 30th, all in-print Criterion Collection titles are 50% off MSRP, both in stores and at barnesandnoble.com. The discounted price applies to upcoming titles that will be released through the end of the sale period, but not to any preorders scheduled for after the sale ends.

Factoring out the discs I already either purchased or received for review, I still have a pretty healthy selection of these titles on my wish list. Namely: ‘Barry Lyndon’, ‘The Breaking Point’, ‘Hopscotch’, ‘Jabberwocky’, ‘The Lure’, ‘Othello’, ‘The Philadelphia Story’, ‘Rebecca’, and ‘Le samourai’, plus a whole lot of older discs I never caught up with. Realistically, with the holiday shopping season coming up, I will have to limit myself to just a couple purchases. To that end, my priorities will be ‘The Philadelphia Story’ and ‘Othello’.

I’ve picked up Barry Lyndon, Blood Simple, and Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me so far. I hope to pick up The Lure, Jabberwocky, and maybe Carnival of Souls.

I have not decided if I’m going to buy anything this Criterion Sale or hold off for more Black Friday purchases. If I do buy some Criterion blu-rays, I’d be interested in Rosemary’s Baby, The Royal Tenenbaums, Rashomon, and Godzilla, Scanners too, but it doesn’t appear to be part of the sale.

All in-print Criterion titles are on sale. This poll only reflects new discs that were released since the last sale. Criterion has released over 500 Blu-rays. A poll trying to encompass all of them would be too unwieldy to manage.

I do understand that. 🙂 I was actually referring to what I saw when looking at B&N’s website. When I pull up Scanners on B&N, it’s listed at the non-sale price of $37.54. For some reason, it doesn’t appear to be a part of the sale.

I’m thinking I’m finally going to pop on the Zatoichi box set. I held off on the initial dual-format release because I had no need for all those DVDs and that box was huge. I was hoping for an all Blu-ray re-release in more shelf friendly packaging down the line. We definitely got the all Blu part, but the awkward (though admittedly lovely) book style packaging remains. It is indeed far smaller than before and I don’t foresee a third release ever so I guess it’s time to suck it up and buy the thing finally.

The Zatoichi series is a lot of fun. The first couple installments are a bit dry, but they quickly let Katsu start having a lot of fun with his performance and it becomes a really good series.

So far The Philadelphia Story, Othello, The Innocents, Rumble Fish, In a Lonely Place, Ace in the Hole, and Sid and Nancy. Jabberwocky when it is released and probably a few more later this month.

I already received Barry Lyndon from Amazon. (In Canada the B&N sale isn’t such a great deal).
I was worried I would find the movie boring so I bought it mostly for the visuals and because I’m a photography nerd, but I really enjoyed the entire film. I actually can’t wait to re-watch it and go through all the features. Really happy with this purchase!

  6. My copy of The Lure arrived from Amazon a couple days ago, damaged from our friends at the USPS so I had to request a new one. Looks like a claw of a hammer or large knitting needle punctured the bubble mailer and the case of the movie itself. I don’t make this shit up! I will also be getting Jabberwocky later in the month via Amazon. As Josh states the obvious, the holiday season is indeed upon us so we must set our priorities. If I do get to the city in the next couple weeks and enter B&N, a moment of weakness may just happen… or not.
