Buying Games From Amazon Just Got Cheaper – 99 Cent Shipping

Amazon wants your business and they want it bad. So bad, in fact, that they’re going to start shipping brand new games out for just $0.99. Really.

Buying a brand new videogame online has always been a bit of a hard sell. Amazon’s been making it easier and more convenient with services like Release Day Delivery, but there’s always been the cost issue. A few dollars can make a huge difference – there’s a reason people buy used copies for a minor discount. To accommodate, Amazon has lowered the price of shipping for new games from $5.99 to just $0.99.

This drop in price makes Amazon the best deal in gaming as far as new releases are concerned. That is, unless you live in Kansas, Kentucky, New York, North Dakota, or Washington, where you’ll still have to pay sales tax on Amazon purchases. If you live in my home state of Michigan, you can pay $59.99 plus $0.99 shipping for ‘Halo: Reach‘ on Amazon – a grand total of $60.98 – or pay $59.99 plus $3.60 worth of sales tax for a total of $63.59. It’s even more pronounced if you’re living in a state like California, where avoiding tax could be as much as a $5 savings.

This is all part of a drive to capture more business that would normally go to brick-and-mortar stores. It’s also running in addition to the already existing game credit program that Amazon’s been promoting. Going back to the earlier example, if you pick up ‘Reach’ at $59.99, you’ll also get $20 in Amazon credit that can be applied to a future game purchase. Not a bad deal at all.
