BlizzCon Cancelled This Year Due to "Jam Packed Schedule"

The convention will be back in 2013. Until then Blizzard is supplying us with the 2012 Battle.net Championship

Blizzard has a lot on its plate for the next year. ' StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm' is under development, the 'Warcraft' expansion 'Mists of Pandaria' is in the works and the long-awaited ' Diablo III' will be released. Add to that the rumored console version of 'Diablo III' and whatever the Blizzard's mystery project is as you've got what the Blizzard blog calls a "jam-packed schedule."

In place of BlizzCon, Blizzard has announced the Battle.net World Championship, which will feature the best of the best players in 'StarCraft II' and 'World of Warcraft.' It's a nice way to plug eSports, but an event that happens in Asia isn't exactly going to make up for the US based fan celebration.

With no BlizzCon 2012 to announce products through, this may simply mean that Blizzard has nothing exciting and new to reveal this year. It will certainly make BlizzCon 2013 a much more hotly anticipated event.

Major League Gaming Moves Over 100 Domains from GoDaddy to Oppose SOPA

Yet another significant force in gaming has spoken out against the SOPA, and this one even took action.

Game companies big and small have come out against the Stop Online Piracy Act even though the Electronic Software Association supports it. The latest to take a stand is Major League Gaming, which just moved over 100 domains from GoDaddy.

There was an amazing amount of uproar about the act and a push to boycott companies that support the act. This recently culminated in a thread on Reddit that suggested a "move your domain day" in which users transferred their domains from the SOPA supporting GoDaddy to another provider that opposes SOPA.

The Stop Online Piracy Act is one of the most inflammatory bills to be introduced in recent years. If passed, the SOPA would give the government a wide range of powers over internet sites that offer copyrighted content illegally. These powers include banning the sites from search engines, barring services like PayPal from doing business with the sites and even blocking the sites completely.

The increased popularity of competitive fighting games has allowed Evo to add new games and new events.

2011 was a great year for eSports. Audiences grew, prize money increased, players got better and games got even better for fans to watch. Fighting games increased in popularity across the board and that's been very good for the Evolution Championship Series, more commonly known as Evo.

Evo has made some significant changes for its 2012 season. Rules have changed, seeding is done differently and more events have been added. The big news though, is that they've amended their lineup to include six very strong fighting games.

Players and fans can expect to see plenty of action from 'Super Street Fighter IV Arcade Edition,' 'Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3,' 'Mortal Kombat 9,' and 'King of Fighters 13' as well as the upcoming titles 'Soul Calibur V' and 'Street Fighter X Tekken.'

Major League Gaming Brings in 3.5 Million Unique Viewers - Dominates the 18-24 Demographic

Wed Dec 07, 2011 at 11:30 AM ET
Tags: Major League Gaming, MLG, StarCraft II, Halo: Reach, Call of Duty: Black Ops, eSports (all tags)

Professional gaming is on its way up in the states, with up to 241,000 peak viewers for the MLG alone.

It's been a real uphill battle to get eSports growing in the states, but over the last few years things have been improving in a big way. The MLG championships on the weekend of November 18th drew in a whopping 241,000 concurrent viewers. MLG boasts a total of 3.5 million unique viewers across their competitions for this year.

A few hundred thousand may not seem like much, but even the biggest competitions held in the U.S. last year didn't break the 100,000 concurrent viewer mark - now in 2011 the MLG has gotten more than double.

Major League Gaming CEO Sundance DiGiovanni says that these viewership numbers are encouraging, especially in the all important young male demographic. "Our live streams of the Pro Circuit National Championships garnered more 18-24 male viewers than Comedy Central, MTV, TBS, and FX draw in an average quarter hour and nearly as many as Adult Swim," he says.

In 2011, MLG featured 'StarCraft II,' 'Halo: Reach,' 'Call of Duty: Black Ops' and 'League of Legends.' Nothing has been announced for 2012 yet, but you can expect things to kick off again in the spring.

YouTube Launching a Game Channel with an Indie and eSports Focus

Thu Nov 03, 2011 at 08:00 AM ET
Tags: eSports, YouTube (all tags)

In addition to pro gaming, you'll see reality shows, news shows and celebrity gamers.

It's nice to see videogames getting some love when big companies look for their newest shows. Of course, it makes sense - numbers are high for eSports streams and there's no reason that YouTube wouldn't want a piece of the action.

START, YouTube's upcoming videogame channel, will feature one of the most well polished eSports competitions around - the IGN Pro League. The IPL has a strong 'StarCraft II' focus but they've been getting into 'League of Legends' a bit too.

In addition to competitive gaming, YouTube will be creating a few originals including 'The Next Game Boss,' which will make indie developers face off reality show style for funding. 'Game Over' will be a weekly news wrapup and 'Celebrity Assassin' will feature famous people playing videogames. No, we're serious - that's the show.

A new iPhone app from Justin.tv's eSports branch Twitch.tv is growing that even bigger, allowing fans to get all of their gaming on the go. Whether you want to check out the action on Level|Up Live, check out the IGN Pro League or get your daily fix of 'StarCraft' tips and tricks from Day[9], you can do it on your phone.

According to the folks at Justin.tv, the iPhone is only the beginning. An iPad app is on the way, as are apps for Android smart phones and tablets. For now, iPhone users can download the Twitch.tv app from the App Store.
