YouTube and Google Play Add Paramount Movies Despite Lawsuit
Fri Apr 06, 2012 at 02:00 PM ETTags: YouTube, Google Play, Streaming, Paramount, Online Rentals (all tags)
Titles like 'Hugo,' 'The Adventures of Tintin,' and 'Captain America' are now available to rent.
Google Play and YouTube have just added around 500 Paramount movies to their rental collection including titles like 'Hugo,' 'Ferris Bueller's Day Off' and 'The Godfather.' Classic titles run $3.99 for HD and $2.99 for SD while the new stuff comes in at $4.99 and $3.99 respectively.
What's particularly interesting about this is that Google is currently involved in a significant lawsuit with Paramount's parent company Viacom about who is at fault for all the copyright infringing user content on YouTube.

Vizio Adds YouTube to Internet Apps
Tue Mar 13, 2012 at 10:00 AM ETTags: Vizio, YouTube, Connected TVs (all tags)
The company hasn't specified whether or not this will be available on all connected Vizio models.
Your TV can be so much more than just a screen for watching the local news on - it can be a place for seeing classic comedy bits, listening to endless ukulele covers and watching cute baby animals do cute baby animal things.
Now your connected Vizio TV will be able to bring you all of those things thanks to a newly added YouTube app. The update was announced last week via Twitter, though there's been little to no information following it up.
So, if you've got a connected Vizio TV, you can swing on over to the YouTube app now to watch your favorite music videos after sitting through 30 second commercials, handheld camera recorded clips of your favorite TV shows and, of course, one movie broken up into 30 5-minute increments.

NBC and YouTube will Stream the 2012 Summer Olympics
Fri Mar 09, 2012 at 12:00 PM ETTags: YouTube, NBC, Streaming (all tags)
Every single Olympic event will be streamed live, not just the big ones.
One of the big problems with televised Olympic coverage is that one channel can only show one event at a time. Even a few channels can't capture everything that's going on over the two weeks or so that the games run. This year, NBC and YouTube are teaming for a solution to that problem.
No matter what event you want to watch, no matter how obscure or unpopular, you'll be able to watch it streaming live on YouTube. Can't watch it live? The games themselves, interviews, televised events and web-exclusive content will all be available to watch on demand.
Olympics junkies will be able to watch over 3,000 hours worth of sporting events on their televisions, PCs, phones and tablets - better get comfy! Sure sounds better than the Comcast hording of the coverage last time, right?!

Sony Adds Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and more to Bravia TVs
Fri Dec 02, 2011 at 12:00 PM ETTags: Sony, Bravia, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube (all tags)
The latest firmware update to 2011 Bravias brings plenty of added functionality, including laptop control.
Receivers, Blu-ray players and TVs are more and more frequently offering customers the ability to control their devices via a smartphone or tablet. If you can control your set from a less capable device, why not a laptop?
That very functionality is being implemented in the newest update to Sony's 2011 Bravia televisions. You'll be able to control different aspects of the set through your laptop including, thankfully, apps that would normally require you to pick letters one-by-one with your remote.
Also new to the TVs are YouTube HD for your high definition Epic Meal Time enjoyment and Facebook integration allows you to share those YouTube videos with your friends. Another new feature is the Twitter Ticker, which displays messages from your Twitter feed across the bottom of your screen as you watch. Could be a fun setup for sharing your thoughts on the game, the Oscars or whatever event you watch with friends.

YouTube Adds Hundreds of Disney Movies to Rent
Mon Nov 28, 2011 at 10:15 AM ETTags: Streaming, YouTube, Disney (all tags)
They'll be adding extras like behind-the-scenes clips, interviews and more as time goes on.
YouTube is really pushing to do something with movie rentals and the newest additions to the lineup just might help them out. The company has added hundreds of Disney and Pixar films to the lineup including big titles like 'Cars,' 'Alice in Wonderland' - the good one - and the 'Pirates of the Caribbean' films.
Movies range from $0.99 up to $3.99 and vary in video quality. Unfortunately, there's no way to tell what movies are available in HD before you watch them - you have to rent them to find out.
The folks at YouTube say that these new additions are "the first hundreds of Walt Disney Studios movies" to hit the service, so it sounds like we can expect plenty more in the future. YouTube also says that special features are on the way.

YouTube Launching a Game Channel with an Indie and eSports Focus
Thu Nov 03, 2011 at 08:00 AM ETTags: eSports, YouTube (all tags)
In addition to pro gaming, you'll see reality shows, news shows and celebrity gamers.
It's nice to see videogames getting some love when big companies look for their newest shows. Of course, it makes sense - numbers are high for eSports streams and there's no reason that YouTube wouldn't want a piece of the action.
START, YouTube's upcoming videogame channel, will feature one of the most well polished eSports competitions around - the IGN Pro League. The IPL has a strong 'StarCraft II' focus but they've been getting into 'League of Legends' a bit too.
In addition to competitive gaming, YouTube will be creating a few originals including 'The Next Game Boss,' which will make indie developers face off reality show style for funding. 'Game Over' will be a weekly news wrapup and 'Celebrity Assassin' will feature famous people playing videogames. No, we're serious - that's the show.

Bill to Make Streaming of Copyrighted Content Illegal Clears Senate
Mon Jun 20, 2011 at 10:00 AM ETTags: Streaming, YouTube, Piracy (all tags)
What this means for sites like YouTube is anyone's guess.
There has been a lot of focus on illegal downloads in the last few years, but streaming really hasn't been touched. Sure, some people will have their YouTube videos taken down and some sites will have their content pulled, but that's about it.
The newest bill to pass through the senate takes an incredibly harsh stance on illegal streaming. Those breaking the law could face up to five years in jail. Just what constitutes an offense? Any website that streams copyrighted content 10 or more times within 180 days is up for grabs. Seems a little harsh, doesn't it?
"Make no mistake: the illegal streaming of content for commercial or financial gain is a crime," writes the anti-piracy group PROTECT IP, "and the Commercial Felony Streaming Act places the appropriate criminal label on the activity."

YouTube Signs Independent Studio to Distribution Deal
Fri Apr 15, 2011 at 02:00 PM ETTags: YouTube, Streaming (all tags)
GoDigital Media Group has signed with YouTube for both movies and television shows.
YouTube has, for the past year, been working hard to become a more legitimate site to visit when looking for movies and television. One of the big pushes recently has been towards original content, and the new deal helps YouTube meet that goal.
Independent studio GoDigital is set to supply YouTube with around 2,000 hours of programming, which is a good step forward for YouTube, and could be beneficial to GoDigital as well.
GoDigital president Logan Mulvey says that YouTube is a natural move for them. "The move makes a lot of sense in the evolution of content distribution," he says."
