YouTube Looks To Capture The Phenomenon of Game Streaming
Fri Mar 29, 2013 at 10:30 AM ETTags: YouTube (all tags)
YouTube now actively pursuing developer integration.
Somewhere between the PlayStation 4's share button and dedicated capture processor and the hordes of donation filled streams at Twitch.tv is YouTube. Recently, YouTube streaming has become an option in certain games, most notably some versions of 'Black Ops 2,' but it seems now that YouTube is ready to debut streaming APIs for both console and mobile developers.
With the GDC announcement of the new API signifies YouTube's recognition of the fascination of game streaming, something that even Nintendo has stumbled into with their Miiverse. Unfortunately, the YouTube plan follows normal Google procedure. The available APIs place emphasis on the developer to support YouTube, a situation that benefits users and benefits YouTube. While some games are enjoyed through streaming and playing, other games leave users preferring just to watch streams. The developer is therefore left with an option to add a feature that may hurt as much as help sales.
For now though, integrated YouTube streaming will likely spread to more games before the long-term viability can be assessed.

iOS 6 Software 4 Beta Rolls Out to Developers - YouTube App Removed From Apple Devices
Tue Aug 07, 2012 at 12:00 PM ETTags: Apple TV, YouTube, iOS 6 (all tags)
The app is still present on Apple TV devices though, so owners might not need to worry.
The iPhone home screen is going to be missing one very familiar button when iOS 6 comes out - the YouTube app is being pulled in the new software update. What's interesting is that while you won't find YouTube on your iPhone or iPad, it's still going to be sitting pretty on the home screen of your Apple TV. At least for now.
The YouTube app is a sort of holdover from the early days of the iPhone when the two were completely incompatible. The licensing deal between Apple and Google has ended and it's not being renewed. There are workarounds on the iPhone and iPad of course, and you can be certain we'll be seeing a Google developed YouTube app before too long.
"Our licensing to include the YouTube app in iOS has ended," says Apple in a statement. "Customers can use YouTube in the Safari browser and Google is working on a new YouTube app to be in the App Store."

Google TV Updated with More Video Finding Features
Thu Jul 26, 2012 at 02:00 PM ETTags: Google TV, YouTube (all tags)
New Releases section pops up, as does phone and tablet control.
Google TV has been improving regularly since it first launched and the latest update, while not mind-blowing in any way, adds a bit of usability to the platform.
The first piece of the update makes it easier to find new movies by adding a New Releases section. It just makes sense. The other part of the update that was revealed – more may be on the way – is the ability to control YouTube videos with your phone or tablet, just like you’ll find on Google’s Nexus Q.

YouTube and Google Play Add Paramount Movies Despite Lawsuit
Fri Apr 06, 2012 at 02:00 PM ETTags: YouTube, Google Play, Streaming, Paramount, Online Rentals (all tags)
Titles like 'Hugo,' 'The Adventures of Tintin,' and 'Captain America' are now available to rent.
Google Play and YouTube have just added around 500 Paramount movies to their rental collection including titles like 'Hugo,' 'Ferris Bueller's Day Off' and 'The Godfather.' Classic titles run $3.99 for HD and $2.99 for SD while the new stuff comes in at $4.99 and $3.99 respectively.
What's particularly interesting about this is that Google is currently involved in a significant lawsuit with Paramount's parent company Viacom about who is at fault for all the copyright infringing user content on YouTube.

Vizio Adds YouTube to Internet Apps
Tue Mar 13, 2012 at 10:00 AM ETTags: Vizio, YouTube, Connected TVs (all tags)
The company hasn't specified whether or not this will be available on all connected Vizio models.
Your TV can be so much more than just a screen for watching the local news on - it can be a place for seeing classic comedy bits, listening to endless ukulele covers and watching cute baby animals do cute baby animal things.
Now your connected Vizio TV will be able to bring you all of those things thanks to a newly added YouTube app. The update was announced last week via Twitter, though there's been little to no information following it up.
So, if you've got a connected Vizio TV, you can swing on over to the YouTube app now to watch your favorite music videos after sitting through 30 second commercials, handheld camera recorded clips of your favorite TV shows and, of course, one movie broken up into 30 5-minute increments.

NBC and YouTube will Stream the 2012 Summer Olympics
Fri Mar 09, 2012 at 12:00 PM ETTags: 2012 Olympics, YouTube, NBC, Streaming (all tags)
Every single Olympic event will be streamed live, not just the big ones.
One of the big problems with televised Olympic coverage is that one channel can only show one event at a time. Even a few channels can't capture everything that's going on over the two weeks or so that the games run. This year, NBC and YouTube are teaming for a solution to that problem.
No matter what event you want to watch, no matter how obscure or unpopular, you'll be able to watch it streaming live on YouTube. Can't watch it live? The games themselves, interviews, televised events and web-exclusive content will all be available to watch on demand.
Olympics junkies will be able to watch over 3,000 hours worth of sporting events on their televisions, PCs, phones and tablets - better get comfy! Sure sounds better than the Comcast hording of the coverage last time, right?!

Sony Adds Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and more to Bravia TVs
Fri Dec 02, 2011 at 12:00 PM ETTags: Sony, Bravia, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube (all tags)
The latest firmware update to 2011 Bravias brings plenty of added functionality, including laptop control.
Receivers, Blu-ray players and TVs are more and more frequently offering customers the ability to control their devices via a smartphone or tablet. If you can control your set from a less capable device, why not a laptop?
That very functionality is being implemented in the newest update to Sony's 2011 Bravia televisions. You'll be able to control different aspects of the set through your laptop including, thankfully, apps that would normally require you to pick letters one-by-one with your remote.
Also new to the TVs are YouTube HD for your high definition Epic Meal Time enjoyment and Facebook integration allows you to share those YouTube videos with your friends. Another new feature is the Twitter Ticker, which displays messages from your Twitter feed across the bottom of your screen as you watch. Could be a fun setup for sharing your thoughts on the game, the Oscars or whatever event you watch with friends.
