Yamaha Cuts DSP Development in Half with New Design Tool

Thu Jan 26, 2012 at 12:00 PM ET
Tags: Yamaha, Industry Trends (all tags)

The Synopsis Processor Designer kept costs down while increasing productivity.

Yamaha's new XMP-1 DSP is impressive, offering 32-channel phrase sound generation and AudioEngine effects. What's even more interesting, especially for Yamaha, is the amount of time required to create it.

The new Synopsys Processor Designer has made development that much easier. "With Processor Designer," says product development manager Morito Morishima, "we doubled functionality for our high definition sound generation DSP, developing it in just one year, including the entire software development tool chain, while reducing cost."

Quicker and more efficient production of DSPs could certainly amount to cheaper prices to consumers or, at the very least, more frequent upgrades to Yamaha's product lines.

The latest edition of the AV Controller app adds some very cool new functionality.

Yamaha's newest version of the AV Controller app for Android and iOS brings with it some new functionality. It's the kind of functionality that seems obvious in hindsight, but didn't enter into minds at launch.

You'll still be able to use your device as a remote control for your receiver and other Yamaha products, but now you'll be able to stream music directly from your phone or tablet to the receiver. Not too shabby for a free application.

You can pick up Yamaha's AV Controller on iTunes or from the Android Marketplace

Yamaha Releases the YHT-S401 Sound Bar Speaker System

Tags: Yamaha, Soundbars (all tags)

The setup includes a sound bar and a receiver with a subwoofer built right in.

The latest release from Yamaha is a sound bar speaker system dubbed the YHT-S401. It's designed for those that don't have the desire or the room to set up a full surround system and promises 7.1 surround from just two components.

At the heart of Yamaha's new sound bar system is, of course, a sound bar with a pair of 50 watt speakers on either side and a 50 watt mid channel. It's also adjustable, which isn't something you see often enough in a sound bar - you can raise it or lower it depending on your arrangement.

The speaker system also includes a receiver that gives you three HDMI inputs, support for 3D video and a headphone jack. It also has a 100 watt subwoofer built right into it, which is unique to say the least. Though it does make it a lot easier to figure out where you're putting your sub.

The YHT-S401 is available now for $699.95.

The YAS-101 produces 7.1 channels of sound and volume leveling functionality.

The latest sound bar to come out of Yamaha is the YAS-101. It's a unique looking bar in that it features a single pair of drivers instead of the usual full front panel.

The two 2-1/2 inch speakers deliver 7.1 channels of sound thanks to Yamaha's Air Surround Xtreme technology which Yamaha says is capable of sorting out dialogue, sound effects and music. Yamaha has also introduced a UniVolume function that gets rid of sound spikes.

In addition to the pair of speakers up front, the YAS-101 sports a dual driver subwoofer driven by an amp delivering 120 watts of power. The bar stands just over four inches tall and lets you connect up via digital, optical or coaxial. It also has a subwoofer out if you want to add your own. You can pick it up now for $299.

It does 3D, video streaming and plays back both DVD-Audio and SACDs.

Yamaha just launched their 2011 line of Aventage receivers, but that doesn't mean they don't have more to reveal. The new BD-A1010 is a 3D capable Blu-ray play that does a little bit of everything.

For starters, it doesn't just play Blu-ray discs. It handles Blu-ray in 1080p and decodes the latest HD audio formats, but it also plays back DVD-Audio and SACDs, which will be a boon to audiophiles. The A1010 also works with a variety of computer file formats like WMV, DivX and MOV.

The player takes care of your streaming needs, assuming your needs are limited to Netflix, Blockbuster on Demand, and YouTube. On the YouTube front, the A1010 uses YouTube Leanback, a version of the site made specifically for those watching from the couch.

iPhone owners will be able to control the A1010 directly from their handheld device and Android users will be getting the same luxury later this year.

The BD-A1010 is available now at an MSRP of $500.
